The Voie d’Antonin le Pieux crosses Saint-Jean-De-Maruéjols-Et-Avéjan from south to north. The town’s history also includes the former asphalt mine, medieval buildings and traces of different religious periods. If you want to include nature and exercise, the Circuit de Beauséjour offers a specific hiking option; outdoor activities and an annual theatre event are also available. When planning your trip, take note of the applicable access conditions and current dates.

Landscape and protected areas

The INPN data sheet, updated on January 7, 2025, lists ZNIEFF area 820030146, covering 1,288.99 hectares and including Saint-Jean-De-Maruéjols-Et-Avéjan. The area is protected under the Loi Montagne and classified as a Habitats Directive site. Its predominantly marly subsoil and relatively flat terrain support numerous small streams, which usually carry water only seasonally. There are also local wet meadows and marshland.

Another habitat type in the area is dry grassland: it is particularly rich in orchids and provides favorable habitats for birds of open landscapes. This means that wetter areas and dry grassland exist side by side in the natural landscape.

Mining history and visitor access

The former SMAC mine site is 1.5 kilometers north of the village. The described route starts in Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols and follows the D979 toward Barjac; from there, continue on foot up the hill along a tree-lined avenue. A permit from the Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols town hall is required to visit. Do not approach the buildings. Check the local access information before your visit.

The industrial history goes back further: the Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols asphalt concession was established in 1859 and operated by the Société Française des Asphaltes from 1872. The Maison des Mines is a restored former residence for engineers. This architectural history can be considered alongside the later mining traces, while keeping the conditions for visiting the former mine site in mind.

Village history in towers, temples and churches

The Tour de l’Horloge is a surviving element of the original village’s former fortifications and is dated to around the 12th century. In 1741, the tower acquired its current appearance and was roofed with glazed tiles. The Protestant temple was inaugurated in 1820. A stone communion table made of asphalt rock, from the first temple built in 1612, is still used there today.

The churches also reveal different facets of the village’s history. The foundations of the Église Saint-Jean-Baptiste probably date to the 12th century. The Église Saint-Pierre d’Avéjan was built in a particularly pure Romanesque style; a crypt lies beneath the Chapel of the Counts of Avéjan. The church is now used for exhibitions and concerts. As the program may vary, check current dates in advance.

At the Pont de Caveirac, it is worth distinguishing between tradition and historical interpretation: the bridge crossed the Claysse near the former Moulin de Caveirac. It is probably medieval in origin, rather than Roman as it is sometimes described.

Hiking, outdoor activities and events

The Circuit de Beauséjour is a 15-kilometer hiking trail rated as easy, starting in Saint-Jean-De-Maruéjols-Et-Avéjan. It passes through the asphalt mines and the hamlet of Avéjan. Check local trail conditions before setting out. Along the route, swimming is possible at Galinier; check the current water conditions before taking a dip.

VACANISPORT offers a fun outdoor experience through the former mines of Saint-Jean-de-Maruéjols and the hamlet of Avéjan, with an escape game, an outdoor adventure game, a treasure hunt and geocaching. As availability may vary by season, ask about current offerings before making plans.

At the SFA site, Athome Théâtre stages “Théâtre sous les Etoiles” every year; a production is listed for 2025. Check the program for current performance dates. For this event, Athome Théâtre employs around ten cultural professionals on fixed-term contracts and welcomes more than 5,000 spectators. If you want to plan your stay around the event, the dates are therefore an important part of your planning.

When choosing a hotel, it helps to decide first what you want to focus on during your trip: the Circuit de Beauséjour offers a specific hiking option, while the towers, temples and churches provide a different perspective on local history. Attending a theatre performance depends on the program, and visits to the former SMAC mine site are subject to permit and distancing rules. This makes it possible to distinguish between the available activities when planning your trip without treating their conditions as interchangeable.
