A Baroque organ dating from 1690 and activities on the Rhône reveal two sides of Roquemaure: cultural heritage in town and discoveries in the surrounding landscape. There are also several cycling routes and a walk through the wine-growing area. During your stay, you can combine culture, nature and outdoor activities according to your own interests.

Canoeing on the Rhône

The canoe trip near Roquemaure passes the former port, the Tour Ronde, the Tour Carrée, a weir and the botanical garden. It goes under the Pont de l’Ile de Miémart and continues towards Parc Amazonia. Lasting about two hours, the trip has a clear time frame. On request, a qualified guide can also provide a guided presentation of the town’s cultural heritage. Canoeing is seasonal; check whether it is available for your travel dates before making plans.

During the trip, you can discover the wildlife and plant life of the Rhône area in a zone designated as a Natura 2000 site. Île de Miémart lies north of Roquemaure’s town centre. Its banks are home to a biodiverse alluvial forest, which is also designated as a Natura 2000 site. Alongside the river landscape, your stay can therefore include protected natural areas.

Church Architecture and Town History

The Collégiale St Jean-Baptiste et St Jean l’Evangéliste was built in the 14th century in the Southern Gothic style on the Jardin du Roi, outside Roquemaure’s town walls. It was originally a fortified church; its present-day bell tower is the former watchtower. The building thus brings together religious architecture and a former defensive function in one place.

The collegiate church has a Baroque organ made from Caroline wood in 1690 by the Frères Julien of Marseille. It is listed as a historic monument. Another place to visit is the 12th-century Chapelle Saint-Joseph des Champs. The Prieuré de Truel also dates from the 12th century: it is a former Romanesque chapel. It can be viewed from the outside and is open to the public only during special events.

For self-guided heritage tours, Wivisites offers engaging audio content on your smartphone; there is no need to download an app. This lets you explore the historic buildings as part of a walking tour without requiring a guided tour.

Cycling Routes and Landscape

The 815-kilometre ViaRhôna cycling route passes through Roquemaure. An alternative is the Véloroute des Chartreux – 3055, which runs from Roquemaure to Villeneuve lez Avignon and crosses vineyards, garrigue and orchards. The ViaRhôna can be considered in the context of its total length, while the Chartreux route has a specific starting point and destination and identifies the landscapes along the way.

The La Côte du Rhône – 54 cycling route passes through Île de Miémart, Roquemaure, Pujaut and the hamlet of Four à Sauveterre. If you prefer to explore on foot, Balade & Découverte – Le plateau des vignerons is a walk through the village and its wine-growing area. The Massif de Caderache is another landscape feature described here: Mediterranean vegetation, Aleppo pines and holm oaks shape its character.

More Activities and Practical Planning

Le Mas de la Gallinière is an educational farm with animals in Roquemaure, home to more than 400 animals. Activities include children’s holiday stays, day courses, birthday events, monthly family activities, and school and after-school visits. The individual programmes may vary. Wine tastings are available at the Rocca Maura wine cellar; opening arrangements may change. It is best to check before visiting.

An annual event is the Fête Annuelle de Saint-Joseph. It takes place on the Sunday around 19 March; the exact date may vary. Roquemaure can be reached from Avignon on liO network route 122. As timetables may change, check the connection before travelling. This makes it easy to plan your stay around the options that interest you—cultural heritage, the Rhône, cycling routes or the wine-growing area.
