On the Poulx plateau, a karst landscape is shaped by predominantly underground water drainage. A large part of the natural area around Poulx lies within the Gorges du Gardon site. Several aven caves are found on the plateau, including the Aven de Mandre and the Aven du Pin. Both of these aven caves are affected by pollution.

Karst landscape and water

The Puits Vieux is the historic water installation preserved in Poulx; other water installations have disappeared. An educational and playful walk explores the importance of water in residents’ everyday lives over time. The aven caves and Puits Vieux represent different relationships with water: on the plateau, the focus is on karst and underground drainage, while the Puits Vieux is a historic installation. The walk adds another perspective by exploring the role water played in everyday life over longer periods.

Church and rural heritage structures

The Église Saint-Michel is listed as a historic monument and was badly damaged during the Wars of Religion. This religious heritage offers a different perspective from the water installation: here, the focus is on a specific historical turning point. The two sites offer different ways of exploring Poulx’s history.

Along the Chemin Blanc, a preserved dry-stone capitelle is hidden in an olive grove. Opposite the Salle des Fêtes car park, another capitelle has been reconstructed to commemorate Poulx’s agricultural and pastoral past. The examples differ in their state of preservation and function: one capitelle is preserved and hidden, while the other has been reconstructed to commemorate the rural past. Alongside a religious monument, they represent different forms of rural heritage structures.

Mountain biking and trail running

The La Source de la Bastide mountain biking route is marked in yellow and has corresponding signs. Since trail signs may be maintained or changed, it is best to check the markings on site. The Poulx stadium car park is listed as the parking area for the route. The Poulx-based running club Courir en Garrigue offers trail running activities in the garrigue. These two sporting options differ: for the mountain biking route, the markings and parking area are relevant; trail running is about the activities of the local club. This distinction helps you plan around your interest in cycling or running.

Plan your stay around your interests

If you’re looking for a hotel in Poulx, start by asking whether landscape, local history or outdoor activities will shape your trip. This helps you plan around one main focus instead of trying to fit every theme into a single itinerary. One stay might be devoted to karst and the area’s connections with water, while another might focus more on historic structures or sporting activities. Let the purpose of your trip guide your search and plan which discoveries you’d like to include.
