Montfaucon lies in a bend of the Rhône on the river’s right bank. Its architectural history, views and wine offer different perspectives on the town. When planning your trip, you can focus on historic buildings, views across the landscape or the local wine culture.

The Château and its architectural history

The Château de Montfaucon has been listed as a Monument historique since 4 June 1926. Its main construction phase dates to the 12th century. Thus, the known period of construction and its later listing represent two distinct points in its history.

The religious buildings also span different eras. The Chapelle Saint-Martin-de-Ribéris dates to the 11th century. The present-day Chapelle Saint-Martin, formerly St-Martin-des-Ribiers, is the oldest building in the commune of Montfaucon. The Chapelle Saint-Maur was rebuilt in the 19th century. The church of Montfaucon dates from 1841 and contains baptismal fonts from Roman times. The date of the church and the age of its furnishings are far apart: the church is comparatively recent, while the baptismal fonts date back to Roman times. The 2026 Fête de la Fraise also took place in Montfaucon on 18 and 19 April, for the third time following the 2025 edition. The programme brought together two areas: a market featuring local producers and craftspeople, as well as a guided tour of the old village planned for this edition.

Panoramic views of the Rhône and climbing routes

The Site d'escalade de Montfaucon has 20 equipped climbing routes and overlooks the riverbanks and the Rhône plain. Seasonal access restrictions may apply at this climbing site; take them into account when planning your visit.

A separate viewpoint on Colline Saint-Maur offers a 360-degree panoramic view over the Gard rhodanien and the Vaucluse. When choosing your activities, different interests come to the fore: the equipped routes at the climbing site, on the one hand, and the all-round view from the viewpoint, on the other.

Wine and local character

Montfaucon is one of the nine original communes of the Côte du Rhône. In particular, all three colours of the renowned Lirac crus are produced here. These details link a historic affiliation with the town’s present-day wine identity.

Domaine Château de Montfaucon offers Côtes du Rhône for sale in a tasting cellar. The estate also has wine cellars beneath 16th-century vaulted ceilings. Wine tastings and immersive tours focus on history, unique architecture and wines. A visit centred on wine therefore also highlights architectural history and design, not just the tasting itself.

If you are planning a tasting or tour, it is advisable to check dates and availability in advance. Please enjoy wine responsibly.
