Monoblet brings together distinctive twin mountains, traces of silk-making and trails through vineyard landscapes. This means you can explore the area from different perspectives: its scenery, its cultural history or a specific tour. When planning, it is worth taking note of the different route lengths and estimated times, as well as the seasonal visiting conditions for individual attractions.

Mountain landscapes and the southern Cévennes

Rouquette and Saint Chamand are Monoblet’s distinctive twin mountains. According to its landscape description, the Sentier du Château de Fressac offers views of the foothills of the Cévennes, with the two mountains in the foreground rising to more than 500 metres. Monoblet lies in the Parc National des Cévennes, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The landscape also varies within the area: in the north, a granite massif and chestnut trees shape the scenery. To the south, the landscape is characterised by limestone, with grapevines, olive trees and mulberry trees among its distinctive plants. This contrast makes Monoblet an appealing choice for travellers who take nature and cultural history into account when choosing a destination.

Trails for different time budgets

For a shorter route, consider the hiking trail between Rouquette and Saint Chamand, which is 2.8 kilometres long. As route information may be updated, check the current description before setting off. The Sentier du Château de Fressac starts at the entrance to the hamlet of Montèzes in Monoblet. The 2023 guide gives its length as 4.6 kilometres and its duration as 1 hour 30 minutes. The route crosses the GR63 and offers views of the foothills of the Cévennes.

The three-hour Dans le vignoble du Piémont loop requires a different time commitment. It starts at the Mas des Manhans winery, passes through the village of Monoblet and covers 20 to 30 kilometres on roads and paths with only gentle climbs. The route ends with a tasting of Mas des Manhans wines. Information about this loop and the Sentier du Château de Fressac can help you compare the time needed for a tour with that for a shorter route, without treating the two trails as the same.

The Carré de Soie interpretation trail has a focus of its own. Inaugurated on 26 June 2017, it shares information about the flora of the Cévennes and the local silk heritage. Another botanical educational trail leads to the former Gréfheuille silk mill. If you are particularly interested in the history of silk-making, you can link these trails in your mind with the village’s historic sites.

Silk history and architecture

The Gréfeuilhe silk mill is considered an emblematic site of the Cévennes silk industry. It is housed in an 18th-century building renovated by the municipality of Monoblet in the 1980s. A visit to Cévennes en Soie in Monoblet introduces visitors to mulberry cultivation, silkworm rearing and cocoon processing—from spinning and dyeing to weaving. As seasonal arrangements may change, check the visiting conditions for your travel dates in advance.

Another striking building is the Temple de Monoblet. Completed in 1843, it has an octagonal floor plan. Following a two-stage restoration in July 1999, it became a venue for frequent cultural gatherings. The Maison du Synode in Montèzes commemorates the first Synod of the Desert, which met there in August 1715. A large marble memorial plaque is set into the façade. The house is inhabited and cannot be visited; check this visiting restriction locally in advance.

Historic traces along the trails

The former school of Valestalière is another historic discovery along the Valat de Valestalière: the route leads to the building, which was erected in 1882 and closed in 1970. Such stops give a tour a different focus from scenic viewpoints or the botanical educational trail. When choosing your stay in Monoblet, you can therefore first decide whether you would like to devote more time to nature, trails or the silk heritage.
