Les Angles can be explored through a range of themes: medieval defensive architecture, paths through the village’s history, astronomy and a section of the ViaRhôna cycle route. When planning a stay, this variety helps you choose what to focus on—whether you’re interested in historic traces, want to explore astronomical topics or are planning a cycling stage.
Village History Between Defensive Architecture and Art
The presbytery, or presbytère in French, is located in a former medieval defensive building. The church stands within the same military complex. The presbytery has been partially protected as a Monument historique since October 31, 1912. Traces also remain of the 12th-century castle: a northwest tower and walls to the north, west and south, enclosing an inner courtyard. The presbytery, church and castle ruins thus offer different insights into the town’s architectural history.
Two walking routes add further points of interest. The Sentier du Patrimoine was inaugurated in September 2018 and complements the Sentier des Peintres and the Sentier des Plantes. Information panels mark ten emblematic monuments in the municipality. The Sentier des Peintres leads through the lanes to places that inspired 20th-century painters; reproductions of their works appear there on lava-stone slabs. The two routes differ in how they present the village: one focuses on monuments and information panels, while the other connects village paths with art.
Astronomy at the Parc du Cosmos
At the Parc du Cosmos planetarium, animated images of constellations, the Milky Way, the Moon and the planets are projected. Deep-sky objects such as nebulae and galaxies are also among the subjects shown. The planetarium focuses on celestial objects and how they are represented; guided tours in the Parc also take visitors on walks through the garrigue.
These tours follow garrigue trails through the universe—from the Sun to distant galaxies—and also cover the history of space exploration. The two formats complement each other: animated projections in the planetarium and guided walks that connect astronomical topics with the history of space exploration.
The ViaRhĂ´na near Les Angles
The town also has a specific connection to a cycling stage. Near Les Angles, the ViaRhĂ´na passes under the TGV railway bridges; from there, a greenway runs to Aramon. If you plan to include this section in your route, check the route conditions before setting off.
The communal oven, the “four banal”
A text from 1586 refers to the existence of the communal oven, the “four banal.” On various occasions, volunteers fire up the oven again to bake bread and other foods. The communal oven adds a community activity involving on-site baking to the historic buildings and walking routes.
