In Congénies, Roman building remains, a district with medieval fortifications and later public buildings can be read as different chapters in the history of the town. There is also a pre-Roman route that can be traced across the entire commune, another Voie Verte (greenway) that passes through Congénies, and an arboretum featuring Mediterranean orchard species. This means you can explore cultural history and nature side by side; the arboretum is accessible on foot only.

Architecture and military history

At Notre-Dame de Congénies, foundations and sections of wall from the 12th-century Romanesque predecessor have been preserved. In 1367, the church was incorporated into the town’s defensive system, “Le Fort.” The Le Fort district grew around a defensive wall built in 1367 and retains an almost square layout, right-angled streets, and architectural features from the 15th and 16th centuries. The contrast offers two perspectives: at the church, the focus is on surviving building elements; at Le Fort, it is on the district’s layout and street network.

Buildings and traces of their past

The Protestant temple was rebuilt in the Vaunage between 1817 and 1818. Since 1892, its bell tower has housed the bell known as “La Concorde.” The Fontaine de la Bourse tells a different story: this cast-iron fountain, built in 1868, was fed by the Font-vieille spring and restored in 2008 as part of the Pays de Sommières Communauté de communes’ heritage plan. The Puits du Montadou stands out for its dimensions: its well is more than nine metres deep, and the underground water reservoir is 60 metres long and two metres high. A municipal employee restored the Puits in 2021. La Poste, the post office building, was designed by architect Armand Pellier; it was restored in 2019, preserving its architectural character. The complex of the Quaker house and Quaker cemetery is considered unique in France.

The waterworks also have distinct features: the Fontaine is notable for its cast-iron construction and former supply from Font-vieille; the Puits stands out for the depth of its well and the dimensions of its underground reservoir.

Historic route and Voie Verte

The route of the pre-Roman Via luteva can be traced across the entire commune. Its remains pass the ancient spring of Fontvieille. The Voie Verte de la Vaunage also passes through Congénies. The two routes differ in character: the Via luteva is notable for its historic course through the commune, while the Voie Verte offers a different option as a route passing through Congénies. If you are interested in older routes, the Via luteva is a specific point of interest.

Mediterranean orchard species in the arboretum

The Arboretum de Congénies has a different focus from the historic buildings and routes. It showcases Mediterranean orchard species, including fig, jujube and pomegranate trees, and explains the traditional dietary uses of these plants. It is accessible on foot only, so plan for the walk if you intend to visit the arboretum.
