Belvezet offers a striking contrast between a fortified castle, a former church now used for cultural events, and three circular walks with different time requirements. The Castellas, with construction phases dating from the 13th and 14th centuries, reflects the history of the village; Saint-André is now a cultural venue. Those who want to explore on foot can choose between a five-hour loop and two shorter routes on the Draille des Seynes. This makes it easy to shape your stay around your interests in history, culture and walking.

Castle and cultural venue in Belvezet

The Castellas de Belvezet is a fortified castle whose main construction phases date from the 13th and 14th centuries. The keep and ruins are fully listed as historic monuments; the listing was made by decree on 3 August 1998. The castle complex thus brings together a specific historical theme and a protected structure.

The restored former church of Saint-André has a different role: it now serves as a cultural venue with an exhibition and meeting hall. The Castellas and Saint-André offer different points of interest – the castle and its medieval construction phases on the one hand, and the present-day cultural use of a former place of worship on the other.

Three circular walks with different time requirements

The Le Mas-de-l’Ancienne-Église hike is a 15.01 km circular route with 350 m of elevation gain and a stated duration of five hours. It is marked as a Petite Randonnée trail; an audio guide is available via the Latitude Gard smartphone app. The route follows paths once used by Camisard troops and passes hidden hamlets. At five hours, this is the longest of the three options featured here, based on the stated duration.

La Draille des Seynes – Route 1 is a 4.5 km circular route with a stated duration of two hours. La Draille des Seynes – Route 2 covers six kilometres, has 80 m of elevation gain and a stated duration of two and a half hours. Both routes combine artworks with information about the ecosystem. This gives you two shorter options alongside the five-hour Le Mas-de-l’Ancienne-Église hike; Route 2 takes longer and covers more distance than Route 1.

Getting there and starting points

The Le Mas-de-l’Ancienne-Église hike starts and ends in Belvezet. The village is 15 km north of Uzès; by road, take the D 979 and D 218. The salle polyvalente on the D 218 is the recommended parking area for this hike. You can also consult the liO information when planning your journey by public transport.

The two Draille routes each have their own starting point: Route 1 starts at the car park by the former washhouse in Mas de l’Ancienne Église in Belvezet, while Route 2 starts at Parking de l’Arbousier. Together with the different distances and times, this can help you choose the walk that fits your available time.
