St. Arnoult-En-Yvelines brings together historic buildings, cultural attractions and routes with a range of different connections. The selection includes the Romanesque crypt of the Église Saint-Nicolas, the Maison Elsa Triolet-Aragon, annual exhibitions and paths that pass through the town. When planning your stay, you can choose architectural history, cultural events, historic paths or a cycling route as your main focus.

Architectural history and literary connections

The Église Saint-Nicolas has a Romanesque crypt dating from the 9th or 10th century. The church also has significant building phases dating from the 12th century and the second quarter of the 16th century. The history of the building thus spans several centuries, from the crypt to the church’s later construction phases.

The Maison Elsa Triolet-Aragon is located in the Moulin de Villeneuve, whose construction dates back to the beginning of the 13th century. This site brings together a literary connection and the history of a mill of medieval origin. Every year, the Maison hosts a cultural season featuring exhibitions of painting, sculpture and photography, meetings with writers and poets, and musical performances.

The recurring program offers a range of cultural events, not just a single type of exhibition.

Museum, historic routes and park

The Musée des Arts et Traditions Populaires has six themed rooms and presents several themed exhibitions each year. The rooms and annual exhibition program offer two specific starting points for planning cultural visits: the museum’s thematic layout and its recurring exhibitions. This complements the range of formats in the cultural season at the Maison Elsa Triolet-Aragon.

The historic walking tour of Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines was created and is led by the Société Historique de Saint-Arnoult. The “Les moulins de Saint-Arnoult” walk has a different focus: it follows the Rémarde past former mills. The two routes can be distinguished by their themes—local history on the walking tour, or the river and former mills on the walk.

The Parc de l’Aleu offers another cultural and historical connection. The architect Jean-Charles Adolphe Alphand designed and laid it out during the Second Empire. The park has a remarkable collection of exotic and native plants. Its period of creation, named architect and plant life bring the history of park design alongside the town’s architectural and museum themes.

Routes through the town

The GR655, known as the Chemin de Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, passes through Saint-Arnoult-en-Yvelines. The Véloscénie cycling route from Paris to Mont-Saint-Michel also passes through the town. The names represent different travel connections: the GR655 is associated with the Way of St. James, while the Véloscénie is specifically designated as a cycling route with named endpoints. If you are planning your trip around cycling, the Véloscénie is the clearly identified cycling option; the GR655 adds a link to the Way of St. James to your route choices.

When choosing your travel dates, it is also helpful to distinguish between historic buildings and recurring annual cultural events. If an exhibition theme or performance is the reason for your stay, plan around the current dates.
