The church, farmsteads and historic paths give Sailly a distinct cultural and historical character, while the source of the Montcient and wooded slopes add a tangible connection to the landscape. When planning your trip, you can combine two questions: How would you like to explore the landscape on foot, and what architectural or agricultural history would you like to discover in the village?

The Montcient and paths through Sailly

Sailly lies at the source of the Montcient and is one of 20 communes in the Yvelines department that belong to the Vexin français Regional Natural Park. The village stretches along both sides of the river in the valley and rises gently towards the wooded slopes. The river, valley and slopes shape the character of the local landscape.

The Sentier du patrimoine de Sailly is a 4.8-kilometre walking route; the walk takes around 1 hour and 30 minutes. You can use this approximate time as a guide when planning your day.

A municipal heritage trail includes a viewpoint at the Ferme de Maigremont. The Lavoir de la Montcient washhouse is a stop on the historic trail through Sailly; access may depend on trail conditions.

The Itinéraire Vexin 1944 walking trail passes through Fontenay-Saint-Père, Sailly and Brueil-en-Vexin. It follows the chronology of events that have left a lasting mark on collective memory. Check trail conditions for the relevant route before setting out.

The trails offer different ways to plan your visit: for the Sentier, the distance and approximate walking time are specified; the Itinéraire Vexin 1944 focuses on the historical chronology across three communes. This lets you choose your walk according to the time available or your interests.

Church and rural heritage

The present-day church of Saint-Sulpice was built between 1854 and 1856. The Marquis de Sailly had the neo-Gothic building constructed in the second half of the 19th century on the remains of a 12th-century church. Two building phases can be seen here: the medieval predecessor and the present-day church.

The former blacksmith’s workshop in Sailly bears witness to rural and agricultural life in the 20th century. A château is also among the village’s sights.

Farmsteads and agriculture

The Ferme de la Cure is a traditional farm in the French Vexin, more than 300 years old. It is open to the public and serves as an educational venue for experiments and demonstrations; activities on site may vary.

The Ferme du Colombier includes a dovecote. Wheat, barley, rapeseed and peas are grown there using environmentally conscious farming methods. As agricultural production may change, check current visitor information if you plan to include these details in your trip.
