A stay in Les Loges-en-Josas can take several different directions: the gates of the Grand Parc, the Église Saint-Eustache, the forest and the Sentier de l’aqueduc. If you are planning an overnight stay here, you can first decide whether local history, routes through the countryside or travel by public transport will shape your plans.

Getting there and finding your way

Gare de Petit-Jouy-Les Loges is served by Line V; the journey time to Gare de Versailles-Chantiers is listed as six minutes. Bus line 6164 serves Les Loges-en-Josas from Gare de Petit-Jouy, through the town center and on to the business park. The two lines therefore offer different reference points for planning: one gives a journey time to Versailles-Chantiers, while the other describes its route within the municipality. Check the timetables before travelling.

The Sentier de l’aqueduc also passes by Gare de Petit-Jouy-les-Loges. The station is therefore also a point of reference in the description of this route. If you would like to combine a train journey with a hike, check the relevant departure times and the latest route details before your outing.

Gates, church and historic estates

La Porte de Jouy is the last surviving example in its original condition of the 24 gates that led to Louis XIV’s royal hunting grounds in the Grand Parc. The gate was built in 1684 to plans by Jules Hardouin Mansart and was listed as a Monument historique in 1989. Its history and construction date can be considered together through this particular structure: the site is part of the history of the royal hunting grounds, while the gate itself dates from the 17th century.

Porte des Loges also tells a story of change and preservation: after being moved stone by stone, it remains visible at the La Garenne roundabout. Église Saint-Eustache reflects another chapter in the town’s history. It replaced a 13th-century chapel in 1699 and preserves a Renaissance portal from the 16th century in its façade. The church is listed in the French Inventaire général du patrimoine culturel. Also associated with it are a seated statue of the Virgin and Child and a painting of the Entombment, both classified as Monuments historiques.

Fief du Renard is a small 17th-century château with a medieval cellar. The two sites point to different periods: the history of Ferme de l’Hôpital goes back to the Middle Ages, while Fief du Renard combines a 17th-century château with an older structural element.

Château des Côtes lies partly in Les Loges-en-Josas and partly in Jouy-en-Josas; its entrance is on the Les Loges-en-Josas side. Alphonse Mallet had the château built in 1875. The Japanese garden Midori no sate also has its own history: its owner, Hugues Krafft, created it after a trip to Japan. This included a Japanese pavilion imported from Japan and built by Japanese builders. It was still there in 1999; its condition later deteriorated.

Forest, waterworks and hiking route

Bois de la Garenne des Loges is part of the Forêt domaniale de Versailles. Its paths are used by walkers, horse riders and cyclists. This offers a choice of activities to consider when planning; which ones suit your stay depends on what you would like to do.

Another surviving testament to the landscape and engineering is a section of the Rigole des Loges. It was created in 1684 to channel water from the plateau, via the Buc siphon, to the fountains of Versailles. The rigole offers a different perspective on the landscape from the gates and historic estates: here, the focus is on the flow of water and its route to the fountains of Versailles.

For a longer outing, the 2021 FFR hiking description gives the Sentier de l’aqueduc as 13.5 kilometers long, with an estimated duration of about three hours and 30 minutes. The trail passes under the Arcades de Buc and then follows the aqueduct before heading to the Bièvre and through the forest. These details give you a specific time frame for the hike; check the latest route information before setting out.
