When considering Gambais as a travel destination, you can explore nature, trails and architecture as three distinct themes. The town has been part of the Parc naturel régional de la Haute Vallée de Chevreuse since 2010; it also has designated natural areas, a local route for pedestrians and cyclists, as well as the Château de Neuville and the Church of Saint-Aignan. When planning your trip, it is worth distinguishing between route types and visiting conditions: the local route has a set length, the long-distance trail is on a very different scale, and group visits to the Château require advance booking.

Protected Areas and Nature in Gambais

Four ZNIEFF sites of ecological, faunal and floristic interest have been designated in Gambais. There are also two protected areas outside Natura 2000. The designated protected areas are home to at least 932 species, including 122 protected species. The nature theme therefore ranges from an overview of several protected areas to a specific description of individual habitats.

The ZNIEFF Tourbière de l’étang des Bruyères comprises a pond in a peaty valley floor. It is home to a healthy population of common toads; the alpine newt also breeds there. This brings both the biodiversity of the designated natural areas and the distinctive features of this named wetland into focus. For travellers interested in nature and species, Gambais offers several different perspectives: information about the protected areas as a whole and details of a specific habitat.

A Local Route and a Long-Distance Trail

The eco-friendly route along Avenue de Neuville is 4.2 kilometres long. It connects the Château de Neuville with the junction with departmental road 179 and was completed in 2018. It is intended for pedestrians, with or without pushchairs, people with reduced mobility, and cyclists; it is separated from motorised traffic. The named endpoints and fixed length provide a clearly defined framework for planning a walk or bike ride.

The GR®22 long-distance trail offers a different kind of route: its 253-kilometre Section 1 from Paris to La Chapelle-Montligeon passes through Gambais. This puts a 4.2-kilometre local route alongside a long-distance section on a very different scale. If you plan to hike the GR®22, check the route details before setting out.

Château de Neuville and the Church of Saint-Aignan

The Château de Neuville was rebuilt in 1756 by the Marquise Agnès de Revol. Group visits are available year-round for a fee and by prior arrangement. Agree on a date in advance and bear in mind that visits are intended for groups. The Château is also occasionally rented out for weddings, receptions and audiovisual filming; availability may vary.

The Church of Saint-Aignan in Gambais was built in 996 by Robert le Pieux on the ruins of a small chapel. Its architecture includes a barrel vault depicting the sky and its constellations. The vault adds a specific architectural feature to the building’s early history: alongside its founding date, the church interior’s figurative design is also a notable feature for visitors interested in culture.
