In Cernay-La-Ville, nature and cultural history come together when planning a trip: circular walks vary in length, difficulty and focus, and include the Église Saint-Brice, the Vaux de Cernay Abbey complex and Le Petit Moulin. The routes range from about one to about three hours and are rated very easy, easy or moderate.

Circular walks by duration and theme

The “La vallée du Ru des Vaux entre Cernay et Senlisse” route is an easy 4.5 km circular walk that takes about two hours. The start and finish are at the car park of the Centre culturel Léon-Germain Pelouse. Its themes are fauna and flora.

“Au fil des Moulins” is a moderate 6.8 km circular walk, taking about three hours. The start and finish are at the car park next to the wall of the Abbaye des Vaux de Cernay in Cernay-la-Ville; this route also focuses on fauna and flora.

The very easy “La carrière des Maréchaux, sentier pédagogique” circular walk is 4.1 km long and takes about one hour. It starts at the Maréchaux car park. Its themes include archaeology and history, fauna and flora, and geology.

For a direct comparison of durations, the one-hour, very easy walk is the shortest; the 4.5 km route takes about two hours. The longest of the three listed walks is also the most challenging: 6.8 km and about three hours. This lets you choose a walk to fit the time you have set aside, while keeping the different themes in mind.

Cultural history in Cernay-La-Ville

The main construction phase of the Église Saint-Brice took place in the third quarter of the 16th century. The church has been listed as a “Monument historique” since June 20, 1928. The Domaine de l'ancienne abbaye des Vaux de Cernay, meanwhile, is a medieval abbey complex that Baroness Nathalie de Rothschild remodelled in the Neo-Gothic style in 1875.

Landscape painting is also part of the town’s history: in the 19th century, Cernay-la-Ville attracted landscape painters. Léon Germain Pelouse founded the “Colonie des peintres de Cernay.” The history of the artists and the architectural heritage thus offer different ways of exploring the town’s culture.

Le Petit Moulin des Vaux de Cernay

Le Petit Moulin des Vaux de Cernay received the Île-de-France “Patrimoine d'intérêt régional” designation in 2018. A scenographically designed exhibition presents the history of the Vaux using multimedia and audiovisual elements. It features original paintings by landscape artists, sketches, and objects and tools from everyday life at the time.

Le Petit Moulin is accessible to people with reduced mobility and has an induction loop for hearing-impaired visitors with compatible equipment. Tours in sign language are available by reservation. Disabled parking spaces are marked at the museum entrance.

Landscape and guided tours

Les Vaux de Cernay is designated a “site classé.” The wetlands of the Vaux de Cernay include ponds, meadows and reed beds, and are considered particularly rich in ecological terms. Fauna and flora are a common theme across the circular walks; the “La carrière des Maréchaux” route also covers geology, archaeology and history.

The Parc naturel régional offers guided full-day and half-day tours of the Vaux de Cernay throughout the year. The tours explore topics including the Vaux de Cernay and Le Petit Moulin, the mills, and the landscape painters. You can therefore choose between independent circular walks with different durations and guided outings focused on landscape and cultural themes.
