Two walking loops start in Villiers-Sur-Morin. The village also has a painting in the church of Saint-Rémi, a rich mill history and a local connection to apple processing. Hiking, art and historic trades offer different options to consider when planning a trip.

Walking trails between painting and history

Loop No. 12, “Peintures des paysages de Villiers-sur-Morin,” starts in the village. Loop No. 11, “Trois Brassets pour une Chapelle,” also starts in Villiers-Sur-Morin. Having the same starting point makes the loops’ different themes easy to compare: the title of No. 12 refers to landscape paintings; No. 11 follows in the footsteps of 19th-century painters, the Knights Templar and the Capuchins. This second loop therefore brings together several historical and cultural points of reference. Check current trail conditions locally before setting out.

The Vallée des Peintres has six walking trails around Crécy-la-Chapelle, Villiers-sur-Morin, Couilly-Pont-aux-Dames, Voulangis and Coutevroult. The two loops starting in Villiers-Sur-Morin and this wider area spanning five municipalities address different questions when choosing a walk: the former have a specific starting point, while the six trails cover the surrounding area.

A painting in Saint-Rémi

The church of Saint-Rémi houses the painting “La Rencontre du Christ ressuscité et de Marie-Madeleine.” The title names the meeting between the risen Christ and Mary Magdalene, making the religious subject of the painting immediately clear. Alongside the art-related theme of Loop No. 11, this gives visitors a specifically identified work in the church. Anyone interested in religious art will find a clear point of reference here in Villiers-Sur-Morin.

Mills and their changing uses

Villiers-Sur-Morin borders the Grand Morin. In 1839, there were three mills on its left bank: Ballé, Guillaume and Rivault. Moulin Guillaume was initially a cloth mill, became an oil mill in 1650, then an iron mill, and in 1838 returned to being a grain mill. This sequence illustrates how a single business changed its purpose over time.

A conversion is also recorded for Moulin Revault: in 1900, it became a chamois leather workshop. Alongside Moulin Guillaume’s varied uses, this offers a glimpse of different trades and periods in the history of the mills. The dates mentioned range from the conversion of Moulin Guillaume in 1650 to the change at Moulin Revault in 1900.

Apple processing and a fishing workshop

The Apple Brotherhood tends around thirty apple trees, harvests the fruit and has a professional cider maker turn it into cider and apple juice. Seasonal work includes caring for the trees, harvesting and processing the fruit. Members and invited volunteers take part in the work; volunteers are invited by message. Participation is therefore by invitation, and should be checked locally in advance.

The Étang de Villiers is also associated with a specific activity: it is reserved for the “Pêche Nature découverte” workshop. If you would like to include the workshop in your plans, check the dates and registration details in advance.
