Paley combines a longer hike along the Lunain with buildings and traces from different eras. When planning your visit, the main choice is between a tour lasting several hours and individual historical themes: the “Le Lunain historique” route passes Pont Thierry and a washhouse on its way to the Lunain; in the village, the church, château, and a small square draw attention to architecture and history.

Hiking and the bridge over the Lunain

The “Le Lunain historique” hike starts in Paley, is 16.5 kilometres long, and takes about four hours. It is rated moderate. The approximate duration gives you an idea of how much time to allow if you plan to include the hike in your trip. The trail passes Pont Thierry and a washhouse on its way to the Lunain, combining hiking with specific stops along the river.

Pont Thierry is a Gallo-Roman bridge over the Lunain. Its structure consists of five stone slabs resting on four bundled piers. This structure brings both its historical context and its construction into focus: the slabs and piers show how the bridge is built, while its location makes its connection to the Lunain clear. Those interested in cultural history can also view the bridge as part of the “Le Lunain historique” hike.

The mill and Château de Paley

The Moulin de Toussac dates from the 19th century. It stands beside a mill channel fed by the Lunain and was once used to grind the villagers’ grain. The mill therefore tells of a historical function directly connected to the use of water. The municipal QR-code discovery trail also includes the Moulin de Toussac. The mill and the hiking route offer different perspectives: the mill focuses on the former work carried out by the channel, while the route is a longer hike with stops along the Lunain.

The Château de Paley is a former Templar commandery, built around the 12th century. Its six-metre-high defensive walls enclose a courtyard made up of three levels. The historic site is also gaining new cultural uses: artists’ residencies, cultural events, and immersive experiences are taking shape at the château. Those wishing to learn about Paley through its architectural history will find a different focus here than at the bridge or the mill.

The church, village centre, and an archaeological trace

The Église Saint-Georges is a Gothic building dating from the 12th century and has been protected as a Monument historique since 1949. Its distinctive details include a bell tower with four gables, gargoyles, and a weather vane depicting Saint George. The village centre is also home to a small square enclosed by an old stone wall. From there, you can see the rooftops beside the church. This offers a view of the village centre, while the description of the church highlights individual architectural features.

Another trace along the Lunain is the Polissoir de la Roche-aux-Diables: a block lying partly in the ground, with four grooves. It was probably used to sharpen and polish tools and weapons such as stone axes. This cautious interpretation is part of the find’s story. Together with the buildings, it shows that Paley’s cultural attractions are not limited to a single era or type of sight.
