Ceramics are a defining thread in Sèvres; at the same time, its stories range from medieval architecture to protected green spaces. When planning a stay, it is worth distinguishing these highlights and their different visiting arrangements.

Ceramics: Collections and Workshops

The Musée national de céramique preserves a reference collection of nearly 50,000 works from all periods and countries, as well as contemporary works. Due to renovation work, the museum is temporarily closed until 2030. The announced reopening date may change; check it again before your trip.

The Manufacture de Sèvres continues its work; its workshops are open for visits by advance reservation. Ceramics in Sèvres therefore have a contemporary craft dimension as well as a collection.

Historic Houses and Medieval Features

The Maison des Jardies was formerly owned by Honoré de Balzac and became the home of the Republican Léon Gambetta in 1878. The house and its small garden are listed as Monuments historiques; the Bartholdi monument is classified as a Monument historique. The Maison des Jardies also bears the “Maison des illustres” label and has been open to the public again since September 2014. Check current visiting arrangements before your visit.

Today’s Église Saint-Romain is also dedicated to the patron saint of boatmen. It preserves the base of its 12th-century bell tower and bays from the 13th century. The surviving features thus point to different medieval building phases in a single church.

The first underground quarries at Les Caves du Roi are said to have been created in the 16th century. They provide another historical landmark alongside the church’s architectural features and the historic connections of the Maison des Jardies.

Green Spaces and Leisure Spots

The Brimborion hillside is now a protected area. Parc de Brimborion covers nearly 4.5 hectares and includes tall-grass meadows, flowering hedges and wooded edges where tits and bats nest. The area, vegetation and nesting species offer a concrete glimpse of the park’s habitats.

The Domaine de Brimborion is home to a pony club and a leisure centre. Each may have its own operating arrangements; check the relevant details if you have specific plans to visit. L’Île de Monsieur has a nautical park, inaugurated in 2007.
