Explore Cravanche through two distinct themes: local history and the landscape around the Salbert. Fort Lefevbre and the Maison des Pères represent specific historical landmarks, while the Salbert offers a panoramic view, a fitness trail and a hiking route. This distinction is helpful when planning: these destinations do not all offer the same kind of experience. You can focus on architectural and military history or choose an outdoor activity. It is also worth noting the exact location of the Grotte de Cravanche: it is in the commune of Belfort, not Cravanche.
Historical Sites in Cravanche and on the Salbert
Fort Lefevbre stands at an altitude of 650 m on Mont Salbert. From 1953, the French Air Force converted it into a secondary radar station. The fort was used to monitor the area around Lure and Giromagny, as well as the railway line from Paris. It therefore links a specific military use to a clearly defined historical period. Those interested in more recent history will find another military structure on the heights of the Salbert at Ouvrage G, which was used during the Cold War.
The ATOMES Association secured Ouvrage G and opened it for airsoft. Direct tour requests to the ATOMES Association and arrange your visit with them in advance.
The Maison des Pères reveals another aspect of local history. Today, it serves as Cravanche’s town hall; it was inaugurated on 1 August 1936. Its raised ground floor housed a chapel open to the public, a sacristy and a reception room. The chapel and sacristy reflect its former religious use, while its current role as the town hall places the building in the public life of Cravanche.
The Salbert: Views and Activities
The summit of the Salbert reaches an altitude of 647 m. From there, panoramic views stretch across the Territoire de Belfort and Haute-SaĂ´ne. The Salbert is therefore known not only for its military structures: views across these two named areas are also part of its local character.
The Salbert fitness trail is in the forest on the Salbert, a few minutes’ walk from Cravanche. It offers a range of exercises in a natural setting. The hiking route “Le Salbert (Cravanche)” offers a different kind of activity: it is 7.8 km long and rated difficult. Check current trail conditions before setting out. The type of activity is a helpful distinction when choosing: exercises in a natural setting versus a hike with a stated distance and difficulty rating.
Putting the Grotte de Cravanche in Context
The Grotte de Cravanche is nearby, but lies within the commune of Belfort. During the Neolithic period, it was used exclusively as a burial site. It is also designated a ZNIEFF because it serves as a hibernation site for bats. Its archaeological history and natural significance therefore offer two different perspectives on this nearby site.
