In Fretigney-Et-Velloreille, distinctive nature and heritage attractions meet hiking trails of notably different lengths. Église Saint-Julien is near the town center; Grotte de la Baume Noire is classified as a regional nature reserve and is home to bats. The conditions at each site also matter when planning: the cave’s underground areas are closed to the public year-round, and weekend visits to the church are possible only by prior arrangement. If you are looking for accommodation, these differences can help you decide what to focus on during your stay.
Grotte de la Baume Noire: Nature and conservation
Grotte de la Baume Noire has 115 meters of natural galleries and reaches a depth of 23 meters. It is now classified as a Réserve Naturelle Régionale and provides preferred habitat for several bat species. There is also a clear limit on visits: access to the underground areas is prohibited to the public year-round. So don’t plan on visiting the cave as part of a public underground tour. Its natural environment and conservation status are a distinctive feature of the area, while the marked Circuit pédestre La Baume Noire offers a hiking option.
Église Saint-Julien and local culture
Église Saint-Julien was built in 1759 near the town center and has been protected as a Monument historique under a protection order dated June 3, 1988. It has been fully restored. The altarpiece is particularly noteworthy: each of its decorative elements tells a story, offering a distinctive perspective on the church’s furnishings. However, you cannot assume that a visit will always be possible. The church is open on European Heritage Days; weekend visits are possible by prior arrangement. Keep these conditions in mind if visiting the church is an important part of your plans.
Another heritage detail is the Dame de Piparon: a figure of the Virgin Mary in a niche carved into the rock. It adds a different, more intimate motif of religious art to the church. Both are well suited to a cultural discovery trip, though they are not in the same place and do not involve the same kind of visit.
Choose hiking trails by distance
The Circuit pédestre La Baume Noire starts at the Fourouze parking area near the ponds and is marked with yellow rings. It first follows the Parcours de santé and also runs alongside the Ruisseau des Dhuys. It is 14.5 kilometers long, with pronounced ascents and descents. This means planning for a longer hike with a clearly specified elevation profile. If you would like to compare the distance with a shorter loop, there is a complete circular route that starts and ends at the washhouse and is about 3 kilometers long. This gives you a choice of two notably different distances, without making assumptions about the terrain based on the shorter distance alone.
An activity that requires a reservation
Fretigney Paintball is located on a wooded paintball site by the Ruisseau des Dhuys. The activity is available from age 9 and is open daily year-round, but only with a prior reservation. Plan to book in advance and check current availability for your preferred date. This sets it apart from the hiking trails, whose stated distances and markings help you choose and find your way. During your stay, you can weigh up nature and cultural attractions, a shorter loop, a longer hike, or an activity that requires a reservation.
