Fresse brings together a wooded valley, hiking trails of varying lengths and the bas-reliefs in the Church of Saint Antide. When planning your trip, you can choose between a longer circular route, a shorter trail offering a glimpse of the scattered settlement pattern, and an interest in religious art. The specific trail details can help you decide what to focus on.

Valley and Landscape

The valley of Fresse is framed by the Radelon (Raddon), a small tributary of the Ognon. More than 14 km² of the municipality’s 27 km² area is forested. Forest therefore covers a substantial part of the municipality and is a distinctive feature of the valley landscape.

Hiking Trails and Views

La Caleuche is a moderately difficult circular hiking trail starting in the center of Fresse. It is 12.5 km long and takes about 3 hours and 10 minutes. La Bormillière is also moderately difficult, covers 7 km and starts in Fresse. The route offers a glimpse of the village’s scattered settlement pattern, with around thirty hamlets. From its ridgeline, it offers views of Ternuay, the Plateau des 1000 Étangs and the wooded hills of the southern Vosges.

The Plateau des 1000 Étangs itself is a mosaic landscape of ponds, streams, meadows, marshes and forests, and is home to a diverse range of flora and fauna.

Both trails are moderately difficult, but differ in route type, length and focus. La Caleuche is the longer circular route, with a stated duration; La Bormillière focuses on a shorter distance, the pattern of hamlets and views from the ridgeline. This lets you choose based on distance or your interest in the settlement pattern and scenery. Trail conditions can change; check the condition of your chosen route before setting out.

Cultural Heritage at Saint Antide

The Church of Saint Antide in Fresse contains two bas-reliefs depicting Saint Michael and Saint Francis. The works are made of carved and painted wood and date from the 18th century. They are listed as protected cultural property; the listing took place on 6 November 1974. The date of protection should therefore be distinguished from the artistic dating.

A bas-relief is a sculptural depiction in which figures project from a surface but remain connected to the background. The term describes the form of the works; carved and painted wood describes their material and craftsmanship.

Planning Your Stay

The Haute-Vallée de l’Ognon Tourist Office provides information about hikes, sightseeing, and cultural and sporting events in Fresse and the surrounding area. It also lists 18 circular routes for hiking, mountain biking, horse riding and snowshoeing. The offering therefore extends beyond hiking on foot.

If you plan to visit the Tourist Office or choose a specific circular route, check opening hours and the availability of your chosen route in advance.
