Savigny offers a variety of reasons to visit: Gothic religious architecture, building history, two differently designed dovecotes, cycling and fishing at the Étang. These attractions do not all have the same visiting conditions. At privately owned sites, only the exterior can be viewed; fishing is subject to permits and seasonal access notices.
Church and local history
The present-day Église Saint-Maurice was built in the Gothic style and consecrated on 26 April 1854. It is freely accessible year-round, but only from the outside, except during services or other ceremonies.
The Château de Savigny was built in 1886 on the site of an older building. A monumental gate leading to the estate combines red brickwork and white stone. The château stands on private property and can only be viewed from the outside.
The Savigny cemetery cross dates from the 18th century and was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments on 1 February 1929. The timeline therefore encompasses different events: the consecration of the present-day church, the construction of the château on the site of an older building, and the cross’s later inclusion in the inventory.
Dovecotes in two architectural styles
The Pigeonnier de la ferme du château de Savigny features a precisely articulated design. The first floor, built of dressed stone, contains three round-arched openings, each topped by a half-oculus. There are 150 plaster nesting niches for pigeons around the circumference. Architecturally, two forms relate to one another here: the round arch forms the opening, while the half-oculus sits above it as a distinct crowning element.
The Pigeonnier de la ferme du château is on private property and can only be viewed from the outside. Check this access condition again before travelling.
The Pigeonnier d'agrément à Savigny has different features: flat fish-scale-pattern shingles cover the roof, with a pigeon finial on the ridge. The two structures differ in their emphasis: the Pigeonnier de la ferme du château highlights stone, openings and nesting niches, while the Pigeonnier d'agrément draws attention to the roof covering and the figure on the ridge.
Cycling and fishing at the Étang
The “Le brin d'osier” cycling route passes through Savigny, is 47 kilometres long and is listed with the French Cycling Federation. The route’s length gives your ride a concrete framework if you are considering making cycling a focus of your stay.
The Étang de Savigny covers 82 ares and is home to trout, carp, pike and perch. Fishing is possible at the pond. Permits and applicable conditions are available or can be confirmed on site. Observe the seasonal access notices and check the conditions again before travelling.
When planning, the two activities differ: the route length is a tangible measure for cycling, while fishing requires you to take permits and seasonal access notices into account.
