Fayl-Billot is considered a centre of basketry, a craft in which one-year-old willow shoots are woven together. The local tradition can be explored here from different perspectives—from training at the basketry school to exhibitions and demonstrations, as well as the historic churches and trails in the Bois Banal.

Basketry and Its History

The École Nationale d’Osiériculture et de Vannerie has been training students in Fayl-Billot since 1905; interns were added later. More than 200 people can train there each year. The school thus shapes the local craft tradition not only as a subject, but also as a field of training. The Espace Saint Antoine has a permanent exhibition of traditional and contemporary pieces connected with the basketry school.

The Maison de la Vannerie also offers ways to learn more about the craft. From May to October, individual visitors can take part in guided tours by prior reservation, subject to availability. Visitors can also take a weaving class led by a basket maker or watch an artisan demonstration; the availability of these activities may vary. If you are planning a tour, check availability before your trip.

Experience the Craft and Plan Your Visit

The Festival de la vannerie is an annual festive and cultural event that promotes basketry. Another annual event is the FĂŞte de la Saint Antoine, associated with the patron saint of basket makers. Both events add a festive and cultural dimension to the craft. As dates and formats may vary, it is advisable to check the latest information before your trip.

When choosing activities, it makes a difference whether you prefer a guided tour, a hands-on weaving class or a demonstration: each format has a different focus. The exhibition at the Espace Saint Antoine brings together traditional and contemporary pieces with the school; the activities at the Maison de la Vannerie, by contrast, introduce visitors to the craft through a tour, a demonstration or hands-on weaving. This lets you tailor your stay to your interest in history, observation or taking part, while keeping the different visitor conditions in mind.

Trails and Nature in the Bois Banal

The Bois Banal has trails through a natural area whose flora and fauna change with the seasons. This gives a visit a different focus from basketry and the town’s architectural history: here, the emphasis is on walking the trails and experiencing nature as it changes throughout the year.

The caves in the Bois Banal also bring together nature and history. In the 17th century, people carved them directly into a geological rock layer. A path along the caves became a romantic promenade. This makes it possible to combine a walk with a tangible trace of human labour in the landscape, while the natural surroundings change with the seasons.

At the edge of the Bois Banal, near the schools and the boules court, there is a multisport field, along with picnic tables and benches for spending time outdoors. As these facilities may change, it is best to check their current status before visiting.

Churches and Local Architectural History

The Vieille église de Fayl-Billot preserves the polygonal apse, choir and side chapels of a former priory church, which was partially destroyed in 1874. The present-day Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité church was built between 1865 and 1870 in the 19th-century Neo-Gothic style. The two buildings offer different ways to explore Fayl-Billot: the Vieille église is notable for the surviving parts of a former priory church and its partial destruction, while Notre-Dame-de-la-Nativité is described in terms of its construction period and Neo-Gothic style.

When planning your stay, you can decide how much weight to give the cultural and historical sites, the basketry activities and the trails in the Bois Banal. Some craft activities are seasonal, require reservations or depend on availability; the dates and formats of the two annual events may also change. If you are looking for accommodation, choose Fayl-Billot based on the themes you want to shape your stay, and check your planned visits against the relevant conditions.
