Saint-André-les-Vergers can be explored through a range of highlights: sacred architectural history, surviving traces of Montier La Celle Abbey and public green spaces on the edge of the urban area. There is also a concert and event hall, a wide range of play options and various sports facilities.

Church Art and Historic Traces

The Église Saint-André was rebuilt from east to west in the first half of the 16th century. The church and its stained-glass windows have been classified as historic monuments since 1840. The Église paroissiale Saint-André also houses the 16th-century polychrome limestone sculpture “Saint évêque et donatrice.” It was classified as a protected object on April 4, 1966.

The Benedictine Abbey of Montier La Celle was founded in the 7th century by Abbot Frobert of Troyes. Part of the entrance portal, part of the surrounding wall and the dovecote have survived. At the abbey, the focus is on individual architectural remains, while the history of the Église Saint-André is shaped by its rebuilding and stained-glass windows.

Culture, Play and Sport

Espace Gérard Philipe, also known as La Grange, is a concert and event hall in Saint-André-les-Vergers. The Ludothèque municipale offers free play, games to borrow and playful activities. Its collection includes more than 2,000 games and toys for all age groups.

The Jean-Bianchi sports complex includes a multipurpose hall for activities such as dancing and climbing. Stade d’Echenilly has a floodlit artificial-turf rugby pitch as well as a natural-grass playing field. Access rules may vary at both facilities.

Green Spaces and Outdoor Activities

Three major green spaces are open to the public on the edge of the urban area: Île Germaine, Bert Cortins with the Bassin des Roises, and Fontaine Saint-Martin. The local “piste verte” runs through wooded areas of Île Germaine, Foirail and Fontaine Saint-Martin. The jogging route is 9.5 km long and includes two circuits. Check the signs on site.

Le Foirail also has a skatepark for BMX and wheeled sports such as skateboarding, inline skating and scootering. The Vallée des Viennes is home to a diverse range of wildlife and plant life that draws walkers.

Gardens and Horticultural History

The educational garden at Square David Ben Gourion features a permaculture vegetable garden, a pond, insect hotels, a hedgehog shelter, vines and fruit trees. As the garden features may change over time, it is best to check the current layout before your visit.

Le jardin de l’église is designed in keeping with the medieval tradition of the paradise garden. A cross-shaped path leads to a fountain in the middle. The garden includes an herb garden with edible and medicinal plants such as thyme, chives, savory, rosemary and bay laurel. The “Garden of Time” consists of twelve successive planting beds that bloom month by month. Here, the layout of the paths, herb plantings and blooms spread throughout the year come together.

Growing fruit and vegetables, as well as producing goods from orchards, is also part of the horticultural tradition of Saint-André-les-Vergers. As early as 1559, residents were granted the right to offer vegetables for sale at the market in Troyes. This date anchors local history in a specific historical context.
