Brévonnes combines nature watching at Lac du Temple with a distinctive industrial monument. Migratory cranes can be observed at the dam; it also offers panoramic views of the lake, and the Voie verte des lacs runs along it. Other experiences include a challenging hike, a guided excursion at daybreak and the history of the former Marmoret tileworks. When planning, you can choose between these experiences based on the type of activity and what you want to focus on: views and birdwatching, a longer outing or a guided nature experience each offer a different emphasis.
Views of the lake and migratory cranes
The dam at Brévonnes offers panoramic views of Lac du Temple. Migratory cranes can be observed there, and the Voie verte des lacs runs along the dam. Views and birdwatching appeal to different interests, even though they come together in the same place: the view opens out across the lake, while birdwatching focuses on migratory birds. The dam thus combines sweeping lake views with a specific spot for crane watching.
Hiking with views of the lake and nature reserve
The “Randonnée du Petit Orient” is a challenging 14.3-kilometre hike. It starts in Géraudot, follows the Voie verte to the dam at Brévonnes and offers expansive views of the lake and nature reserve. Given its distance and challenging rating, it should be planned as a separate outing, not a short detour. Check trail conditions and seasonal restrictions before setting out. Access to the dam involves a substantial climb and is not wheelchair accessible. Keep this in mind both for the hike and for a visit to enjoy the views or watch cranes.
Guided nature watching at daybreak
“Le réveil des lacs d’Orient” offers a different kind of experience: a guided nature excursion in Brévonnes at daybreak. The landscapes, sounds and wildlife are observed. The outing ends with a convivial gathering over coffee or tea, where participants share their impressions and discoveries. Unlike the hike, this excursion focuses on guided nature watching and sharing the experience. The choice is therefore less about the nature theme and more about the format: a challenging route or guided observation at daybreak.
Industrial history and sights
The area’s history is also embodied in a striking structure. The 52-metre chimney of the former Marmoret tileworks stands near the dam and resembles a lighthouse. The former tileworks and brickworks was built around 1934 and operated until around 1960; afterwards, industrial use gave way to craft activities. The lighthouse comparison describes its shape, while the construction and operating history explain the site’s former purpose. Another sight is the Église Saint-Clément-et-Saint-Barthélemy. Check whether the church is open before planning a specific visit.
