Chevières brings together a specific place of remembrance and several long-distance routes. The Mémorial Hamilton Coolidge commemorates the American aviator who was killed on 27 October 1918 during an aerial battle over Chevières. The GR 14 and the Route d’Artagnan also pass through the village; the Grande Traversée de l’Argonne approaches it on its Grandpré–Châtel-Chéhéry stage. Hiking, landscape and history therefore all come into play when planning your trip.
Marked trails and routes of different lengths
The Grande Traversée de l’Argonne is a marked, 100-kilometre route for hiking, trail running or mountain biking. It follows the GR 14 for most of its length. Its Grandpré–Châtel-Chéhéry stage approaches Chevières via a white farm track, with the landscape alternating between woodland and open terrain. The route thus offers both a specific approach to the village and a longer trail designated for several outdoor activities.
On the Harricourt–Apremont-sur-Aire section, the GR 14 passes through Grandpré and then Chevières. The part that runs through the village is marked with the Fédération Française de Randonnée Pédestre’s red-and-white trail markers. Along this route are woodland ponds, villages and places shaped by the First World War battles. Those who want to consider both exercise and landscape and history when choosing a route will find them combined along the way.
A separate distance is given for the Mont-Dieu–Apremont-sur-Aire section of the GR 14: it is 40 kilometres long, with an estimated walking time of about nine hours. The 100 kilometres, by contrast, refers to the Grande Traversée de l’Argonne as a whole. The figures therefore relate to different planning scales: one gives the length of a route, while the other gives a specific walking distance and an approximate time. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
Nature in the Natura 2000 area
Chevières is part of the Natura 2000 area FR2112006, “Confluence des vallées de l’Aisne et de l’Aire”. The area is designated as a Special Protection Area for birds. Together with the alternation of woodland and open terrain on the Grande Traversée stage, this protected-area status adds another perspective on the landscape around the trails. If you want to consider nature and landscape as well as route distances when choosing your stay, this is part of Chevières’ character.
Remembering Hamilton Coolidge
The Mémorial Hamilton Coolidge marks the place where the American aviator was killed on 27 October 1918 during an aerial battle over Chevières. His biography also connects him to American history: Hamilton Coolidge was a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, the third President of the United States, and a close friend of Quentin Roosevelt.
Another dated event took place at the Église Saint-Martin in Chevières: on 15 September 2024, it was the setting for the reburial ceremony for Captain Hamilton Coolidge. The memorial and the church therefore represent different points of remembrance—the place where he died in 1918 and the later ceremony. For travellers who take historical places and people into account when choosing a destination, this offers a specific chapter of the village’s history to consider alongside its routes.
The Route d’Artagnan as another route to explore
The Route d’Artagnan also passes through Chevières. It is certified as a Cultural Route of the Council of Europe and comprises more than 8,000 kilometres of equestrian trails. For exploring the route as a whole, you can travel on foot, by bicycle, on horseback or by horse-drawn vehicle. It thus complements the GR 14 with a cultural route that accommodates different ways of travelling. While the GR 14 through Chevières is associated with woodland ponds, villages and places shaped by the First World War battles, the Route d’Artagnan stands out for its cultural designation and extensive equestrian trail network.
