In Olivet, traces of local history meet paths and green spaces along the Loiret. Mills, the Church of Saint Martin and the heritage trail offer insights into architectural history and past uses; by the river, the focus is on walks and nature. When planning your visit, you can focus on heritage or include outdoor activities.
Mills, Church and Local History
The Moulin des Béchets probably dates from the 15th century and was used to grind grain until 1915. The Moulin de la Mothe highlights a different aspect of milling history: its wheel can still turn and generate electricity today. The two mills therefore illustrate different aspects: one its former use and historical context, the other the wheel’s technical capabilities.
The Church of Saint Martin was built between the 13th and 16th centuries. Three bays featuring 13th-century architecture are listed in the Monuments Historiques register. The church’s construction therefore spans several centuries, while the bays mentioned are specifically attributed to 13th-century architecture.
The heritage trail offers a broader view of Olivet’s past: this historical route features 22 stops with explanatory panels. It presents both the area’s tree-growing and wine-growing heritage and the heritage along the banks of the Loiret. Unlike a visit focused on a single building, it brings together several aspects of the town. This may interest you if you would like to discover Olivet’s economic and landscape history as well as its architecture.
Sculptures and Green Spaces
The Chapelle de Couasnon is a former chapel dating from the 18th century. It has been partially restored and hosts sculpture exhibitions. Self-guided visits are possible at any time or on request; check the visiting arrangements in advance, as they may change. The chapel thus complements the mills and church with a historic site where exhibitions are also part of the visit.
The Parc du Poutyl is a 3.5-hectare formal French garden with a rich variety of botanical species. Its terrace offers views of the Loiret River. The park provides a different focus from the historic sites: plant diversity and views shape this green-space experience. Both short walks and longer hikes can also start along the banks of the Loiret, where a discovery and interpretation trail offers a thematic way to explore the surroundings.
Walks, Running Routes and Cultural Events
For walkers, Hop en liberté provides a map of Olivet’s green routes. There are also two running routes that can be used independently. The map and routes cater to different ways of getting outdoors. Municipal access restrictions may apply to some paths, so check the relevant notices before setting out.
CINÉetc. also offers a cultural option with a set schedule: screenings take place at Alliage at 8:30 p.m. on one Friday each month and are followed by a discussion with experts. Film topics and dates vary. If you would like to include a cinema visit in your plans, check the schedule for your preferred dates. This makes it easy to combine the program with the historic sites, the heritage trail or time outdoors.
