Forests, heathland and ponds shape Villeny’s Solognot landscape. The area also offers marked trails, characteristic houses and a red deer museum. Here, nature experiences go hand in hand with insights into regional architecture. The specific attractions make it easy to see which aspect interests you most: exploring the outdoors, admiring architecture or learning more about red deer.

Landscape and trails in Villeny

The Solognot landscape provides a setting for walks and wildlife watching. On the marked trails, you may encounter deer, roe deer and wild boar, and you can also look for their tracks. This is one way to experience the area’s nature without assuming that you will necessarily see wildlife on every walk.

The Sentier de l’étang à la forêt is a family-friendly 7 km loop that can be explored on foot or by bicycle. It leads past a chain of ponds, where you can watch waterbirds such as coots, great crested grebes, tufted ducks and little grebes. The route is especially appealing to anyone who wants to combine time outdoors with views of the pond landscape and its birdlife.

Architecture and the church

Villeny preserves typical half-timbered houses and buildings made of moulded bricks. The Église Saint-Martin features several distinctive architectural details: its west portal is Romanesque, and beside it is a narrow, archaic-looking window with a newly created stained-glass window. The contrast between the Romanesque portal and the newly created stained-glass window brings different design elements together in one building.

A copy of a painting depicting the charity of Saint Martin, made in 1867, also hangs above the altar of the Église Saint-Martin. Another distinctive architectural detail can be found on Rue de la Vicairerie behind the church: a covered upper gallery with 19th-century terracotta elements. Such a gallery is rare in the Sologne. Those interested in architecture will find, alongside half-timbering and brickwork, details relating to individual buildings and their design.

Maison du Cerf and red deer

The Maison du Cerf is a museum dedicated to red deer, housed in an authentic Solognot-style building. Its exhibition covers the development of antlers, how to identify animal tracks and the secrets of the rut. These topics offer different ways to learn about red deer: from a physical feature and signs of their presence to their behaviour during the rut.

The Maison du Cerf offers children adapted tours, activities and activity books. As these visitor options may change, check in advance which offers are available for your planned visit. The seasonal rut experience includes a guided museum tour for a small group of about 15 people, followed by a forest walk where you can listen to the red deer’s rutting calls. Dates and booking conditions may change; check the latest information in advance.

Local cuisine

The Auberge de Villeny offers organic, fine dining, traditional French and vegetarian cuisine. It provides a culinary stop alongside the area’s nature and cultural experiences. As the menu and service may change, check the latest information before visiting.
