Ancient traces, a historic weir and a variety of ways to spend time outdoors give a trip to Thésée several focal points. Cultural heritage highlights include Les Mazelles and the Barrage des Mazelles; nature and leisure take center stage at Parc Le Vaulx Saint Georges and Plan d’eau du Gué Bertin. Wine adds another dimension, with Domaine Villemaine and the “Archéologie et Viticulture” walking route.
Ancient Tasciaca and technical heritage
Les Mazelles are among the surviving remains of ancient Tasciaca, an important Roman settlement and center of pottery production between Tours and Bourges. The archaeological site has been classified as a French historic monument since 1840. Its historical significance can thus be understood both in terms of Tasciaca and the protected status of the surviving site.
The Barrage des Mazelles adds a technical dimension: it is a weir with movable trusses and needles of the type developed by Poirée in 1833–1834. Together, the two sites offer different perspectives on cultural heritage: the remains of a Roman settlement and a technical structure. Combined tours of the Les Mazelles archaeological site and the Musée archéologique de Thésée are offered in July and August. Check the dates for the relevant year if you plan to take this tour.
Nature and time outdoors
Parc Le Vaulx Saint Georges covers seven hectares and contains more than 2,500 trees and 1,000 shrubs. It is open to the public every day throughout the year; admission is free. For planning your trip, the distinction is clear: the park is open year-round, while the combined tour is offered in July and August. If you are planning a special visit, confirm access locally.
Plan d'eau du Gué Bertin is a recreational area between the Cher and the Renne rivers. It has jetties, paths, picnic tables and a children's playground. The fishing platform is easily accessible to people with reduced mobility. The area is used by anglers and hosts numerous fishing competitions. The two natural areas therefore have different focuses: the park is defined by its trees, while water, fishing and picnics take center stage at Gué Bertin.
Wine, walking route and travel
Domaine Villemaine in Thésée offers wine tastings on site and tours of the estate. Since visitor arrangements may change, check the details before your visit. The “Archéologie et Viticulture” route is a walking route dedicated to gastronomy, culture and heritage. These offer two different options for planning your trip: a tasting and tour of the estate, or a themed walking route.
TER trains from Tours, Saint-Pierre-des-Corps and Vierzon stop at Thésée station. If you plan to travel by train, check the current timetable in advance and plan your arrival and departure days around the services actually running.
