Saint-Viâtre combines the ponds of Sologne with short walking trails, a cycling route and a church steeped in history. If you are looking for a hotel in Saint-Viâtre, you can tailor your stay to your interests: the Maison des Étangs focuses on wetlands, while the Église Saint-Viâtre offers insights into local architectural and art history. For outdoor activities, choose between walking trails by two bodies of water and a signposted cycling loop.

Discover and experience the ponds of Sologne

The Maison des Étangs is a museum dedicated to the ponds of Sologne. Its eight themed rooms cover the history, construction and workings of the ponds, as well as fauna, flora, water quality and wetland conservation. You can visit the museum with a guide or independently. A guided tour lasts about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The various indoor areas are accessible to people with reduced mobility.

Water is also the focus outdoors. At Étang de la Ville, a 1.7-kilometre family-friendly educational trail introduces visitors to the importance of Sologne’s ponds. At Plan d’eau du Mouet, there is also a 1.5-kilometre family-friendly walking trail. The birdwatching station is also at Plan d’eau du Mouet. Two educational digital nature trails add to what is available at Étang de la Ville; check before travelling whether the digital formats are available.

The two walking trails are similarly short but have different focuses: the educational trail at Étang de la Ville explains the importance of the ponds, while Plan d’eau du Mouet also has a birdwatching station. Every year, on the last Saturday in October, a traditional seine-net fishing event is also held at Étang de la Ville. Check the specific dates and arrangements before your visit.

Cycling route or village walk?

If you prefer to explore by bike, the Route des Étangs is an easy 31-kilometre loop starting from Saint-Viâtre. It runs between forest and ponds, passing through woods and brick villages, as well as ponds edged with reeds. Green-and-white signs mark the loop in both directions; route number 17 is shown on a purple marker. At 31 kilometres, the cycling loop covers a different distance from the short walking trails by the water.

To explore the village, there is a 2.4-kilometre geolocated walking tour. With the Gustave app and a trailer, visitors can explore Saint-Viâtre and its history in a fun way; a smartphone or tablet can be used. Check the availability of the digital offering and app compatibility before travelling.

Church and historic art

The Église Saint-Viâtre has been protected in its entirety as a historic monument since 22 September 2006. Its crypt is traditionally considered to be the saint’s tomb and is the oldest part of the church. The furnishings include a polyptych with four panels painted on both sides, generally attributed to the early 16th-century Flemish school. The church is open to visitors daily from 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.; check the opening hours before visiting.

You can tailor a visit to Saint-Viâtre to your interests: the museum and church provide cultural highlights, while the walking trails, nature trails and cycling route focus on the ponds and their surroundings. The stated distances help you compare the options without specifying a walking or cycling time.
