Pouillé brings together archaeological remains, architectural history, and a specific hiking option. The Gallo-Roman site of Tasciaca takes you back to a different era than the Église Saint-Saturnin, with its preserved 10th-century west façade and nave rebuilt in the 12th century. For time outdoors, the “Boucle du côteau” offers a hike through vineyards and forests. This lets you decide while planning whether your trip should focus primarily on archaeology, architecture, or landscapes.

Archaeology and Architectural History

In Pouillé, you can visit the Gallo-Roman site of Tasciaca. An excavated fanum temple at Tasciaca can also be seen in Pouillé. Most of the Église Saint-Saturnin’s west façade, dating from the 10th century, has been preserved; the nave was rebuilt in the 12th century. The church has been protected as a historic monument since January 11, 1951.

The Church and Water Engineering Heritage

The church’s architectural history spans its preserved façade, the rebuilding of its nave, and its later protected status. The Barrage des Mazelles offers a different historical focus: built in 1839, it is considered a significant milestone in water engineering heritage and an important witness to the industrial age. It is located on the Cher and also lies within the commune of Pouillé. The contrast offers two distinct cultural and historical perspectives: sacred architecture and water engineering heritage from the industrial age.

Hiking the “Boucle du côteau”

The “Boucle du côteau” is a 7.4-kilometer hiking route with a stated duration of 2 hours and 40 minutes. It starts at the village pond at 1 Rue du Lavoir in Pouillé. Along the way, the route passes through vineyards and forests. About halfway along, you can see a loge de vignes: a small shelter in the vineyard that was used to store equipment and provide shelter during a break. The 7.4-kilometer distance and stated duration give you two practical reference points when planning where the hike fits into your day. You can allow extra time for your own breaks.

Wine Visits and Tuffeau Cellars

Domaine de la Rochette offers tours of the vineyard and wine cellar. The estate also has cellars carved into tuffeau limestone, adding an architectural dimension to the wine theme. Domaine de la Rochette also offers a free wine tasting. A tour and a tasting are different ways to explore what is on offer; check in advance which one suits your travel plans.

Planning Visits and Your Stay

Before traveling to Tasciaca, check the current access arrangements, including public access to the fanum temple. For visits to Domaine de la Rochette, check booking and access requirements in advance and confirm that the free wine tasting is available. If you are looking for hotels in Pouillé, you can plan around the activities you actually want to include.
