To the south, the Cher borders Monthou-Sur-Cher for more than three kilometres. The area also offers wine experiences, buildings with a documented history and activities on the water. When planning your stay, you can explore winegrowing, heritage and river landscapes as distinct themes.
Winegrowing: vineyards and cellars
Domaine Sauvète offers guided insights into winegrowing. Its activities also include a treasure hunt and excursions through the vineyards by electric scooter or gyropod. Each format offers a different focus: you can learn about winegrowing, take part in the treasure hunt or go on an excursion through the vineyards.
Domaine Desloges focuses on the wine cellar. The guided tour includes explanations of the winemaking process and a wine tasting. By comparison, Sauvète focuses on winegrowing and vineyards, while Desloges centres on a cellar tour and tasting. You can choose between the two visits according to your interests.
Château, church and archaeological traces
Château du Gué-Péan can be reached from the town centre by car or bicycle. It is partly classified as a historic monument; a decree dated 10 October 1980 protects its façades, roofs and access bridge. An admission ticket includes self-guided access to the chapel and the tower with its imperial-style roof, as well as a guided tour of the château’s library and salons.
At Église Sainte-Julitte Saint-Cyr, a different architectural feature takes centre stage: an oak supporting structure dating from the 13th century sits above the bell tower, transept and choir bay. The church is protected as a historic monument by a decree dated 6 January 1926. The dates of the protections therefore differ considerably: the decree for the church came earlier, while the oak structure dates back to the 13th century.
The Neolithic polishing stones at La Crémaillère still have very well-preserved polished surfaces. At the Bizard site near Château du Gué-Péan, there are also ruins and remains of a chapel. These archaeological and architectural traces add other specific places to the histories of the château and church, without needing to be combined into a single visit itinerary.
The Cher and Bavet: landscapes and activities
To the south, the Cher borders Monthou-Sur-Cher for a distance of more than three kilometres. Near Monthou, the river was once used for fishing and navigation. It is therefore both part of the landscape and a historic reminder of how the water was used.
A fitness trail runs alongside the Bavet near the municipal body of water. Following the Bavet downstream, you can reach the mills of the Vallée des Meuniers. Fishing in the municipal pond requires an inter-federation fishing card or one of seven other cards issued by the French anglers’ federation. Check which card is currently valid before fishing.
Horse riding and practical planning
Ecuries du Gué-Péan welcomes riders aged three and over, from beginner to advanced level. Activities include riding lessons, training courses and show jumping. Check current dates and availability before making plans.
A route description updated on 23 December 2024 lists the circular route “gué péan - thenay par la foret de choussy”, starting in Monthou-Sur-Cher: 28 kilometres and five hours on horseback. These details provide a specific distance and time frame for the route described; they do not apply to other activities or indicate how long they take.
