Explore Couffy through two distinct themes: the floodplain landscape of the Prairies du Fouzon and the architectural history of the Église Saint-Martin. There are also several trails with different distances and time estimates. If you are planning a stay, the specific starting points and durations can help you consider nature and cultural experiences as separate activities.

Floodplain Landscape and Birdlife

The Prairies du Fouzon include flood-prone meadows along the banks of the Cher, an area of bocage, hedgerows and floodplain forests. On a larger scale, they form a vast landscape between Saint-Aignan and Selles-sur-Cher, and between the Cher, Fouzon and Modon rivers. Riverbanks, open meadows, hedgerows and floodplain forest give the landscape its varied character.

The Prairies du Fouzon are protected under Natura 2000 as both a SPA and an SAC, are designated as an Espace Naturel Sensible, and have ZNIEFF designations of types 1 and 2. Notable plants include Orchis à fleurs lâches and Orchis incarnat; rare birds use the meadows as breeding grounds. These designations are accompanied by specific examples of local plant and bird life.

Trails and Planning Your Time

The Chemin du Pied Cornu is an 11-kilometre circular trail, with a stated duration of 3 hours and 45 minutes. It passes through vineyards and plains, offers views of the valley and then reaches the Prairies du Fouzon. The starting point is the village car park opposite the town hall. Sections are marked with PR signs—a yellow bar or yellow triangle—as well as the white-and-red GR41 markings. Local trail conditions may change, so check them before setting out.

Another option is Prairies et vignobles: this easy walking trail is 12 kilometres long, with a stated duration of 3 hours. It starts in Couffy at 1 Route de Selles. Although this route is one kilometre longer, its stated duration is 45 minutes less than that of the Chemin du Pied Cornu. When planning, it is therefore helpful to consider the stated time as well as the distance, rather than estimating the duration from the kilometres alone.

There is a 2-kilometre walking trail in the Prairies du Fouzon, in the commune of Couffy. Guided discovery tours are also possible; check availability with the area management team.

Architectural History of the Église Saint-Martin

The choir and apse of the Église Saint-Martin date from the 13th century and were altered in the 16th century. In the nave, the keystones of the rib vaults, pilasters and corbels are decorated with sculptures. The motifs include coats of arms, Saint Michael and the dragon, and an angel holding a scroll. The building phases and sculptural decoration add another perspective on Couffy alongside its natural landscapes and trails: architecture and figurative art.
