Nazelles-Négron can be explored through three distinct themes: architectural history, wine and landscapes. Church complexes and châteaux lead to different chapters in the area’s history; when it comes to wine, tastings and the Touraine-Amboise appellation play a special role. The “Loire & Terroir – Circuit n°12” walking trail offers a different perspective, with troglodytic dwellings, a shaded path alongside the river and vineyards. If you are looking for accommodation, you can first decide whether culture, wine or landscapes will shape your stay.
Churches and Châteaux: Local Architectural History
The Église Saint-Symphorien in Négron is a complex dating from the 15th century and is dedicated to Saint Symphorian. Its central basket-handle vault is considered quite rare in the region. The neighbouring barn is also part of the architectural setting: it has a roof typical of Touraine and impressive roof timbers. The church was listed as a historic monument by order dated 18 November 1953. In Nazelles, the Église Saint-Pierre adds to the area’s ecclesiastical heritage with its “La Crucifixion” stained-glass window, which was classified as an immovable historic monument on 2 February 1904.
The Château de Nazelles has its own clearly dated architectural history. In 1520, it was owned by Thomas Bohier, the builder of Chenonceaux; at that time, he had the manor house built. An order dated 1 October 1963 protects the façades and roofs as components of a historic monument. The dates refer to different aspects: 1520 to Bohier’s ownership and the construction of the manor house, and 1963 to the protection of the façades and roofs.
Wine: Appellation, Cellars and Planning
The Touraine-Amboise appellation stretches along the eastern slopes from Cangey to Nazelles-Négron. Its terroir is characterised by clay-and-gravel soils and so-called Perruches soils, which give the wines their distinctive character. Château de Montdomaine invites visitors to discover natural wines from its 17 hectares of vineyards in the Vouvray, Touraine-Amboise and Touraine appellations. Visits to Château de Montdomaine are available by appointment only.
Maison Gandon offers a wine tasting in its troglodytic cellar. A wine tasting with an immersive experience in the vineyards is also offered there by appointment. When planning, it is important to note the arrangements for each experience: visits to Montdomaine require an appointment; at Maison Gandon, this applies to the tasting with the vineyard experience. The experiences therefore differ not only in their settings—the cellar and the vineyards—but also in what the appointment requirement applies to.
Walking Trail and Natural Heritage
The “Loire & Terroir – Circuit n°12” walking trail passes through Nazelles-Négron and Noisay. Along the slopes, it passes old troglodytic dwellings; the route follows a shaded path alongside the river or runs through the vineyards. Here, the focus is on the landscape and dwellings set into the slopes, rather than on individual church and château buildings. The Cisse is also part of Nazelles-Négron’s natural heritage, adding a connection to the natural surroundings alongside the architectural and wine-related themes.
