At the edge of the confluence of the Loire and Vienne rivers, Chouzé-Sur-Loire is a Loire village with strong ties to river navigation. For trip planning, the village offers two distinct perspectives: the history of its former Loire port and architectural heritage spanning from the 16th century to a former priory. There is also the ILES DE CHOUZE natural area. This lets you shape your stay around your own interests, rather than trying to squeeze everything into a tight itinerary.

The Loire Port and Its History

Quai des Sarrazins preserves the 800-metre-long quay of what was once an important Loire port. It was extended in the 19th century and restored in 1999. The Musée des Mariniers is devoted to the history of the villagers, Loire boatmen, and river navigation. Thematic panels cover these subjects, and several models are also on display. Together, the quay and the museum offer two tangible ways to explore the history of the river: a place by the water and the story of its people and navigation.

Walking Trail and Paths Along the Levee

The Circuit patrimoine – Au temps des meuniers is an easy 3.6-kilometre loop that takes about 1 hour and 30 minutes. It starts at Quai des Sarrazins, opposite the Musée des Mariniers, and ends there as well. Numbered stops are explained in a discovery booklet. This gives you the loop’s distance, estimated time, and directions for planning your walk. The Chemin de la corderie is another route: it runs along the levee and can still be walked today.

Townhouse, Château, and Parish Church

The notable 16th-century Maison aux Tourelles was built between steep gables of dressed stone and topped with a slate roof. The Château des Réaux, formerly called Plessis-Rideau, dates from the 15th century. Its wing, built entirely of tuffeau limestone, dates from the 17th century; the western moat remains. The parish church contains Renaissance paintings and an altar stone from the chapel of the former Priory of Plessis aux Moines, founded in the 11th century. Some cultural sites are privately owned, so check access for the specific site before visiting.

The ILES DE CHOUZE Natural Area

The area includes amphibious communities and alluvial forests. Around ten species of conservation interest have been recorded there, including one protected species. ILES DE CHOUZE is designated under the Birds and Habitats Directives and lies within a Regional Natural Park. These natural features add a distinct focus to trip planning, alongside river navigation and architectural history.

Travel Dates and Accommodation Planning

The Musée des Mariniers is open from mid-June to mid-September, Thursday to Sunday, from 2 to 6 p.m.; visitors are also welcomed year-round by appointment. From June to September, the Martinienne II offers a boat trip organized in partnership with winegrowers from Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgueil and the Friends of the Musée des Mariniers de Chouzé. If you plan to take advantage of either of these seasonal options, check the museum opening hours or the trip dates and booking options before you travel. When looking for a hotel in Chouzé-Sur-Loire, it can help to decide on your travel dates first, so you can plan your stay around the opening hours or seasonal program.
