The Seven Locks are the historic heart of Rogny-Les-Sept-Écluses. The site is free to visit and open 24 hours a day, year-round; information panels at the foot of the locks tell the story of the site. Together with the washhouse, Saint Loup Church and cultural events, they offer different ways to explore local history: the locks’ construction, the work of washerwomen depicted there and occasional concerts. Trails along the Canal de Briare, following a former canal route and through wooded landscapes dotted with ponds can also shape your stay.

The History of the Seven Locks

The former locks below the Canal de Briare, known as Les Sept-Ecluses, were listed as a Monument historique by decree on 29 December 1983. The flight of locks was initially designed as a structure comprising six adjoining locks; a seventh was added later. The seven locks were intended to overcome a 24-metre difference in elevation towards the Loing Valley. The structure thus tells the story of both its original design and its later expansion.

During guided tours, numerous documents are used to explain the site’s construction, operation and development from 1597 to 1887. If you plan to take this tour, check availability and booking conditions in advance, as they may vary.

Washhouse, Church and Art

Rogny’s washhouse offers another way to explore local history. It dates from 1895; life-size frescoes depict the work of washerwomen. The washhouse is free to visit. You can get the key from the tourist office or the campsite. During the season, guided tours are also organised for groups of more than ten people. For a group visit, ask about the specific arrangements in advance, as visiting arrangements may vary by season.

Saint Loup Church occasionally hosts concerts. If attending a concert is an important part of your travel plans, check the dates in advance. Separately, the painting “Les Pèlerins d’Emmaüs” is dated 1757; it was listed as a Monument historique in 1908.

Cultural Activities and Local Trails

The free Legendr app offers two immersive heritage trails in Rogny. It adds a digital format to the options for exploring local history. As the provider may update the content, check whether the trails are available in the app before using it.

For a hike with a stated time frame, the “Les Sept Écluses d'Henri IV” trail offers specific details: it is rated easy, is 9.8 km long and has 34 m of elevation gain; the stated duration is 2 hours and 55 minutes. Route details may be updated, so check them before setting out.

Marked hiking trail No. 72 follows part of the Canal de Briare’s water supply system and returns to the Seven Locks along the former canal route. Its availability is listed seasonally; check the details for your travel dates. From Rogny, La Scandibérique follows the Canal de Briare and initially runs along the Rigole de l'Étang-Neuf, which borders the Seven Locks site. The route passes through wooded landscapes dotted with ponds. If you want to plan around a specific time frame, you can use the stated duration of the circular trail as a guide; Trail 72 and La Scandibérique offer other ways to explore the waterways and landscape.
