Champcevrais lies on the edge of Puisaye and Gâtinais. The area is rural in character, with notable architectural and historical features including the Château de Châtres and Église Saint-Germain. A circular trail also passes landscape and cultural points of interest. This lets you appreciate the town through its heritage and surroundings, rather than focusing your stay on a single theme.
Château and church: two distinct historical traces
The Château de Châtres is a 17th-century château in private ownership. It is partially protected as a historic monument. The protected features include the façades and roofs of the château and outbuildings, the moats, the park and its built features, two basins, and a structure known as the chapel pavilion. It was listed by decree on 16 September 1985. The protection therefore covers not only the château building, but also parts of its landscaped grounds and outbuildings.
The layout and furnishings are the main features of Église Saint-Germain. The church has a rectangular plan, with a two-bay nave and a long, three-bay choir. A bay is a section of a church interior; this description briefly indicates how the nave and choir are divided. Inside are about ten polychrome wooden statues, characteristic of local folk art. A plaque in the church states that Louis XIV partly funded its reconstruction after a hurricane destroyed the original nave in 1680. Alongside the building’s layout, the church’s collection thus also reflects a locally handed-down account of its reconstruction and the distinct tradition of woodcarving.
Landscape and circular trail
Meadows, forests, cultivated fields, wetlands and natural ponds shape the landscape around Champcevrais. The range extends from woodland and farmland to wetland habitats and bodies of water. If you would like to consider the landscape as well as buildings when choosing a place to stay, you will find several different landscape features around the town.
The Le clocher et la motte Saint-Jean circular trail eventually returns to the church. Along the way, it passes an educational information panel about the Motte Saint-Jean; the motte itself is on private property. The trail also crosses Les Fréminets, which is lined with small ponds. At the level of the access road to Château Claire-Fontaine, the circular trail turns right onto a shady avenue. It also passes the Château Bouron retirement home, leaving the building on the left. The trail’s landmarks are quite varied: alongside the church as the return point, the panel about the motte, the ponds, the avenue and the retirement home serve as waypoints along the circular route.
