Church architecture and waterworks shape Teigny’s cultural and historical character; the V56 cycling route also passes through the village. This provides two distinct themes to consider when planning your trip: architectural styles and their details on the one hand, and the cycling connection on the other. You can plan your stay around either theme or take both into account when choosing your destination.

Church architecture and furnishings

The Église Saint-Nazaire-Saint-Celse has a floor plan in the shape of a Latin cross. Its basic form is defined by a long main section and a transept. The baptismal fonts in the nave of the Église Saint-Nazaire-et-Saint-Celse in Teigny are made of Tonnerre stone from the Yonne département. Their surround consists of oak boards with moulded outer edges, alternating with turned balusters; the balusters may be made of walnut. This furnishings piece brings together several materials, while the floor plan defines the overall form of the church building. Visitors interested in Teigny’s cultural history can therefore explore both the architecture of the space and the design of the baptismal fonts.

Cross and Pierre des morts

The Croix de Teigny stands at the intersection of the D42, Rue d’Amont and a local road. It is a mission and jubilee cross dating from 1865. The Pierre des morts de Teigny stands in front of the cross at the same intersection. This shared location offers two clearly named points of reference for finding your way around the village: the cross and the Pierre des morts have different names, and the cross is also identified by its date. Those interested in local history can distinguish between the two landmarks and take their precise location into account.

Fountains and waterworks

Along the village street beside the Armance, the Source de Teigny feeds a small, semicircular stone basin. At the Fontaine-Abreuvoir-Lavoir de Teigny, a spring behind the structure feeds the washing basin. Its overflow runs forward into a livestock trough with two basins. The entire structure and the paving in front of it have been restored. The sequence of spring, washing basin, overflow and trough shows how the different functions are arranged within this structure. The fountains on the church square are also among the village’s waterworks: they were built over an artesian well. Taken together, Teigny is home to several distinct forms: a small semicircular stone basin, a washing and watering structure, and fountains on the church square.

Teigny in the Armance Valley

The settlement of Teigny extends through the Armance Valley from Rue Barillot in the west to Rue d’Amont in the northeast. This stretch between two named streets provides a spatial frame for the village and complements the landmarks that help visitors find their way around. Teigny can therefore also be understood through its location in the Armance Valley, as well as through its church, cross and waterworks.

Cycling route through Teigny

The Saint-Jacques à vélo V56 cycling route runs from Vézelay to Varzy via the D119 through Teigny. This gives cyclists a specific reason to include the village in their route planning; its buildings add a cultural and historical dimension. If you plan to use the V56, check the route details before setting off. This lets you take the route into account when planning and decide whether architecture, village history or waterworks should play the biggest part in your stay.
