Sougy-sur-Loire can be explored through a range of themes: religious architecture, the Loire’s historic navigation and a geological feature at the Gour des Fontaines. This gives you different options to consider when planning your trip. You can focus on architectural history, river history or the route along the riverbank.

Churches and chapel: different architectural styles

The Church of Saint-Bénigne is a Romanesque building dating from the 12th century. Its floor plan follows the shape of a Latin cross; inside, notable details include an apse with a domed vault and the main window in the choir. The window depicts Christ on the cross. Together, the floor plan, vault and image provide specific details to look for when viewing the church’s architecture.

The Sainte-Catherine Chapel in the hamlet of Tinte has a different architectural history. This private chapel dates from the 15th century and is built of plastered stone. Its rectangular floor plan and roof of small, flat tiles made from local terracotta distinguish its form from that of Saint-Bénigne. The chapel was rebuilt after a fire during the Hundred Years’ War. As it is private, check in advance whether a visit is possible.

Its connection to film is also part of the site’s history: the chapel in Tinte served as a location for “Hiroshima, mon amour”. Different cultural associations come together here—the medieval architectural history and a later film connection—although they are not the same kind of attraction.

Port de Tinte and the history of the Loire

Port de Tinte recalls the time when the Loire was used for navigation. At the height of river navigation in the 17th century, the port was a stop on the Decize–Nevers–Cosne route. Limestone from quarries was also transported through the port. This history of trade and transport gives the place name Tinte its own historical connection to the Loire.

Since the end of June 2023, two tables, two benches and two rubbish bins have been available for visitors on the Loire riverbank in the hamlet of Tinte. Check the condition of the facilities before your trip. This lets you combine the history of the old port with a visit to the riverbank, while keeping the historic role of Port de Tinte distinct from today’s visitor facilities.

The route to the Gour des Fontaines

From the old Port de Tinte, a roughly 1 km stretch leads through a remarkable natural area along the Loire to the Gour des Fontaines. The approximate distance gives you an idea of the route; check the trail conditions before your trip. Linking the old port with the natural formation, this stretch offers a different focus from the church architecture or the history of river navigation.

The Gour des Fontaines is a carbonate concretion in the form of a barrier across an underground drain. This geological description shows what sets the site apart from an ordinary stretch of riverbank: the focus is a specific formation connected to an underground drain. The route and the Gour can therefore be viewed together as a nature-focused visit, while the port is the historic starting point for the route.

Play, sport and riding lessons

For play and exercise, there is the Parc Ludique et Sportif des Varennes, or PLSV for short. The park has play and sports equipment, a multisport court for Brazilian football, basketball and volleyball, and a skatepark. It is intended for all generations and also welcomes people from neighbouring villages. If these facilities are important to your plans, check their condition before your trip.

The Centre équestre des Bruyères offers riding lessons to prepare for the Galop certification tests. Check in advance on current operations and booking conditions. This will help you distinguish between the area’s cultural sites, the nature trail and the play, sports or riding options when planning your trip, rather than treating these different possibilities as one single programme.
