Luzy combines a distinctive cultural heritage with trails through hilly, wooded surroundings. In the town, the Tour des Barons, the tapestries in the town hall and surviving traces of fortifications tell different chapters of local history; the surrounding area is ideal for walking and cycling.

Cultural heritage and historic technology

The Tour des Barons is the only surviving remnant of the former Château de Luzy. Dating from the 14th century, the tower houses a museum about the lives of local people and old farming equipment. In summer, the Comité Patrimoine Culture et Tourisme Luzycois welcomes visitors to the Tour des Barons. If you are planning a visit, check in advance what options are available during your travel dates.

Eight Aubusson tapestries hang in the town hall’s reception hall and depict the biblical story of Esther. They date from the first quarter of the 18th century and are made of wool and silk using a tapestry-weaving technique used in Aubusson. They were listed as historic monuments in 1903. Visits to the tapestry room are arranged through the town hall secretariat; additional access is available during the European Heritage Days. If needed, arrange a visit with the town hall and check the dates of the event.

The surviving fortifications include the wall along Rue des Fossés and two restored 15th-century defensive towers. The Musée du Moulin offers another glimpse of historic technology: many of the mill’s components and mechanisms have been preserved, and its displays bring together the past and the present. Together, these architectural remains, farming equipment and mill technology offer different ways to explore Luzy’s history.

Music that shapes when you travel

The festivals also add their own cultural highlights. The Fête du violon (Cordes en folie) brings together popular violin traditions from France and around the world with contemporary, older, current and traditional music. The Fête de l’accordéon (Soufflets en fêtes) is open to everyone and features concerts, dances, workshops and other events focused on traditional music. If you would like to plan your trip around one of the festivals, check the event dates in advance.

Walking and cycling in the surrounding area

The Sentier de l’Alène is a 2 km family-friendly circular trail starting at Place de l’Église and following the Alène River. Information boards explain the river and its surroundings; there are also play areas and a fitness trail. The trail is free, suitable for children and can be explored independently at any time. As operating conditions may change, check them before setting out if you are planning your visit around the trail.

Luzy lies at the southern gateway to the Morvan Regional Natural Park. Hills, forests and natural meadows surround the town, with panoramic views of the wooded Mont-Beuvray massif. Luzy and the surrounding area have numerous walking and mountain biking trails through a well-preserved natural landscape. This makes it possible to combine cultural activities in town with time outdoors as separate focuses of your trip.

You can rent electric bikes to explore Luzy and the surrounding area; check availability in advance. One named mountain biking route, the GTMC, Étang–Luzy–Étang, goes to Luzy and continues to Cuzy and its pond. Check your transport arrangements for this route again before setting out.
