The Château de Rochefort-sur-Brévon was built in 1888 in the Neo-Renaissance style on a rocky promontory above the Brévon Valley. Rochefort-sur-Brévon is also located in the heart of the Parc national de forêts. The château’s history, Romanesque church architecture and a mostly wooded circular trail offer different points of focus for planning your trip.

The château’s history and architectural additions

The original Château de Rochefort, which belonged to the Sire du Puiset, is documented from 1235. After a fire in 1730, only the dovecote and the fortification walls remained. The Château de Rochefort-sur-Brévon was built much later, in 1888, in the Neo-Renaissance style. The term Neo-Renaissance refers to architecture that revisits forms from the Renaissance. A rocky promontory is a projecting feature of the terrain, so the château’s position above the Brévon Valley also reflects its distinctive topography.

Another dated milestone is 1896, when Les châteaux de Rochefort were complemented by stables, a terraced garden, an orangery and a park.

Forges and church architecture

The restoration status also differs between the forges. The lower forge, Forge du Bas, is in the château park and has been restored; the upper forge, Forge du Haut, is currently being restored. The condition of the upper forge may change as the work progresses.

The Église de la Nativité is a rural Romanesque place of worship. Its floor plan is in the shape of a Latin cross, the transept is indicated rather than fully developed, and the building has a single nave. The choir is narrower and has a pointed barrel vault. Eight consecration crosses from the 17th century add to its architectural character.

The church’s dedication to Saint Maur is rare in the Côte-d'Or département and could point to an area that once belonged to a monastery. This possible monastic connection remains a historical interpretation. Together with the consecration crosses, the dedication offers another distinct perspective on the church’s history.

Wooded circular trail and nature

The Vallée du Brevon circular trail is mostly wooded. Viewpoints look out over the villages of Beaulieu and Rochefort-sur-Brevon, as well as the Brévon Valley. Along the way, visitors can discover a variety of tree species and remarkable trees; the landscape is a subject in its own right, alongside the viewpoints.

Wildlife that may be spotted includes red deer, roe deer, wild boar and herons. Sightings depend on the season and are not guaranteed. If you plan to walk the trail, you can therefore appreciate the trees and wooded landscape as nature features in their own right, without counting on seeing any particular animal. Check current trail conditions before setting out.
