Is-Sur-Tille brings together the Bief des Courtines, a signposted woodland circular trail and architectural history with specific points of interest. The promenade on Rue Gambetta follows the Bief; its history can be traced back to the 12th century. Between the town centre and Parc des Capucins, washhouses line the waterway. The Les Mauritaines circular trail complements the urban riverside path with woodland and the limestone plateau above the town.

By the Water and on Les Mauritaines

Les Mauritaines passes through the forests of Is-Sur-Tille and across the limestone plateau above the town. The circular trail starts at the Capucins car park, is 10.9 kilometres long and marked in yellow. The hike is listed as taking around 2 hours and 45 minutes. This approximate duration makes it easier to fit the trail into your day’s plans. Before setting off, it is worth checking the latest route information.

Church, Château and Chapel

The Église Saint-Léger was built in the 12th century on the site of an older place of worship. Merovingian sarcophagi were discovered there in the 1960s. The bell tower is covered with glazed tiles, typical of Burgundian architecture. One of its three bells is Louise, which weighs 1,802 kilograms.

Two building phases can be distinguished at Château Charbonnel. The Olivier-de-Lénoncourt Tower and gargoyles remain from the first château, built on this site in 1537. The façade of the second château bears gargoyles dating from 1657, when it was built on the site of the first château. The dates therefore mark distinct building phases: 1537 for the first château and 1657 for the second.

The Gothic Chapelle Saint-Charles was intended to house the tomb of its founder and his daughter Caroline. Construction began in July 1848; the chapel was fully renovated in 2022.

Gardens and Public Cultural Venues

At the site of the Kiosque and rose garden, a pergola hints at the original plan: it was intended to be a rose garden. The decorative kiosk is characteristic of 19th-century gardens. As part of the rose garden’s restoration, the town commissioned the rose “Belle issoise” in 2022 as an image of the town.

Espace Carnot is a cultural and digital venue open to everyone. Its facilities include a media library, an exhibition space, a digital area, a video game room, a toy library and a digital museum. Espace Carnot is located in the former Carnot school. The building was constructed in 1884 from stone quarried in Is-Sur-Tille.

Memorial Sites and Truffle Culture

The surviving memorial to the American camp includes a restored chimney from the officers’ mess, reserve tanks near the RD 959 and a stele in the industrial estate. In summer, a free guided tour about the camp’s history was offered, led by René Perrat; registration with the tourist office was required. If you would like to plan for this tour, ask the tourist office about current dates.

The Burgundy truffle (Tuber uncinatum) is a local specialty of Is-Sur-Tille and the subject of specialist research. COVATI holds an annual fair dedicated to it; check the dates before your trip. A year-round place to learn about the subject is the educational truffle plantation of Pays Seine-et-Tilles, on the Route de la truffe de Bourgogne. Its playful, educational trail is open to everyone.
