Châtillon-Sur-Seine offers several perspectives on cultural history: archaeology, sacred art and buildings from different centuries each add their own distinctive touch. You can arrange these themes according to your personal interests during your stay. The Musée du Pays Châtillonnais – Trésor de Vix brings together archaeology, fine art, history and natural sciences; churches and historic buildings provide concrete examples of architectural styles and features.

Archaeology and Collections

The Musée du Châtillonnais has been recognised as a Musée de France since 17 September 2003. The Musée du Pays Châtillonnais – Trésor de Vix is housed in the buildings of Notre-Dame Abbey and has 2,000 m² of exhibition space. The tomb of the Lady of Vix, a princely burial dating to around 500 BC, is presented in the museum as evidence of the wealth and prestige of early European elites. Here, an archaeological find is considered alongside its significance for the social standing of these elites. The other collections range from fine art and history to natural sciences.

Churches and Historic Buildings

The Église Saint-Nicolas was built in the last quarter of the 12th century and has been classified as a historic monument since 1942. Two stained-glass windows from the 16th century are associated with the Tree of Jesse and the legend of the pilgrims of Saint-Jacques de Compostelle, and have Trojan origins. The Maison Philandrier offers a different perspective: the house, built in the 16th century, belonged to a respected citizen. A room on the first floor is decorated with 17th-century wall paintings depicting the four continents. The paintings are hidden behind panelling and therefore could not be examined.

The Auditoire Royal was a royal courtroom and town hall; the building was constructed at the end of the 16th century. Its painted decoration dates from the classical period, and the interior was completed in the 17th century. The building's construction and the completion of its interior therefore took place in different centuries—a useful distinction when interpreting its various historical layers.

The Église Saint-Vorles is a simple church with Lombard arcades, built at the beginning of the 11th century. Its underground chapel is dedicated to Saint Bernard. The church also houses a 16th-century sculptural group of the Holy Sepulchre. Thus, an early building history and a much later work of sacred art stand side by side in one building.

Fortress Remains and Cycling Route

The Vestiges du Château des Ducs de Bourgogne tell the story of the Duchy of Burgundy's fortifications. Built in the 12th and 14th centuries as an outlying fortress, they were demolished in 1598. Guided tours are available for groups by arrangement. If you plan to take a tour, confirm the date and availability in advance.

Another option is mountain bike route no. 1, “Circuit d'initiation de la Belette,” which starts in Châtillon-Sur-Seine. It is marked as a blue route, difficulty level 1, and is 12.3 km long. Alongside the cultural and historical attractions, this gives you specific information about a cycling route to consider. Opening times and route details may change seasonally; check this information before planning your trip.
