The GR34 runs along the coast of Penestin and is also known as the Chemin des douaniers. The Plage de la Mine d'Or, almost two kilometres long, its birdlife and shellfish culture add different themes to this coastal landscape. When planning your trip, you can therefore choose between coastal walks, nature, water sports and cultural interests.

Coast, Landscape and Birdlife

The Plage de la Mine d'Or is a favourite place for walks at any time of year. At almost two kilometres long, the beach has a clear sense of scale. The Mine d'Or cliff is a separate feature: it is classified as a geological site unique in Europe. Its appearance is defined by ochre and yellow tones. The beach and cliff thus represent two different aspects of this stretch of coast—a walk by the sea and a striking geological landscape.

Birdlife is also part of the character of the coast. It is classified as a “Zone d’Importance Communautaire pour les Oiseaux” and is home to numerous bird species that breed or overwinter there. The nature theme is therefore not limited to a single season: the information covers both breeding and overwintering species. If you choose Penestin for its landscapes, you will find this distinctive natural feature alongside the coastal path and beach.

Water Sports in Varied Conditions

Palandrin Bay is used for kitesurfing and windsurfing; conditions depend on the weather. The weather at the time therefore matters when planning these activities. Another point of reference is the Centre Nautique Claude Chesneau at Poudrantais Beach. Its sailing area offers suitable weather and safety conditions for sailing. The bay and the Centre Nautique thus represent different, specific forms of water sports.

These activities complement the coastal walks, but do not form part of a shared circular route or a set itinerary. If you are weighing up nature, beach activities and water sports, the conditions for each can help you choose what to focus on: walks at the Mine d'Or are described as suitable in all seasons, while conditions in the bay depend on the weather.

Visits and Practical Information

The Le Palandrin site can be visited year-round by groups aged 10 and over, with advance reservation. The age limit and reservation requirement apply to this visit. The Penestin Tourist Office also offers families a four-kilometre “Circuit spécial poussette” on request. The conditions differ between a visit to Le Palandrin and this route: the former requires advance reservation, while the latter is offered on request.

Shellfish Culture, an Exhibition and a Festival

The Maison de la Mytiliculture is housed in the former lighthouse at Tréhiguier and is dedicated to discovering, showcasing and promoting mussel farming. Its exhibition traces the life cycle of the blue mussel from birth to harvest. It also covers feeding and predators. Photographs, models and old tools illustrate the work of mussel farmers. A balcony offers views over the Vilaine estuary. The subject of mussel farming thus ranges from the natural life cycle to the tools of the trade.

Regional designations also give mussels a special place: Penestin has been one of France’s “Sites Remarquables du Goût” since 2013. Penestin bouchot mussels have been listed in France’s “Patrimoine Culturel Immatériel (PCI)” since 2020. The Fête des Mouclades takes place in Penestin every year in early October. Check the specific festival dates for your travel year if you would like to plan your trip around it.

The activities described here have different focuses and timing. Walks at the Plage de la Mine d'Or are suitable in any season; visits to Le Palandrin are also possible year-round, but only for groups aged 10 and over and with advance reservation. The festival, held annually in early October, offers a seasonal point of reference, while kitesurfing and windsurfing depend on the weather. This lets you plan your travel dates around the activities and cultural themes that matter to you.
