Those considering Carnac for a cultural and coastal stay will find two clearly distinct highlights: the megalithic sites of European prehistory and the landscape along the Bay of Quiberon. There are also religious buildings with different architectural influences, the village of Saint-Colomban, and activities on the water. You can tailor your stay to culture, architecture, nature or water sports.

Megaliths and prehistory

The Alignements de Carnac are the largest megalithic complex of their kind in the world and an important site of European prehistory. The World Heritage property “Megaliths of Carnac and of the shores of Morbihan” was added to the UNESCO World Heritage List in 2025.

The footpath around the Alignements sites is freely accessible at no charge; temporary conditions may change. For guided tours, you can check visiting times, reserve online or buy tickets at the Maison des mégalithes. Check opening times and reservation conditions before your trip.

Monuments and architecture

The Tumulus Saint-Michel is about 10 metres high, 125 metres long and 60 metres wide. It was built around 4500 BC and is considered one of the largest tumuli in Europe. Its dimensions show that its scale is defined not only by its height, but also by its length and width. At its summit are the Chapelle Saint-Michel and a calvary dating from the 16th century. An orientation table offers a panoramic view of the Bay of Quiberon, Belle-ĂŽle-en-Mer and the Rhuys Peninsula.

The Musée de Préhistoire de Carnac is the world’s first museum dedicated to megalithism. The monument and the museum thus offer two distinct ways to explore Carnac’s prehistory.

For a different architectural perspective, visit the church of Saint-Cornély and the Chapelle Saint Colomban. Saint-Cornély was built in the 17th century and is considered one of the finest Renaissance buildings in Morbihan. The Chapelle Saint Colomban dates from the late 16th century and was built in the Flamboyant Gothic style. The two buildings therefore differ in both their dates and their architectural styles.

The village of Saint-Colomban preserves architecture typical of Breton villages, with granite houses and slate roofs dating from the 16th and 17th centuries. Here, building materials and village architecture shape the impression, rather than the monumental scale of the megalithic sites.

Bay, nature and water activities

Anse du PĂ´ lies in the heart of the Bay of Quiberon. The former small harbour attracts numerous birds throughout the year, with their presence varying by season. So if birdlife is a priority, factor the season into your plans.

Water activities offered in Carnac include sailing, windsurfing, stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking, wingfoiling, diving, kitesurfing and boat hire. The range offers different options, from paddle sports to sailing and diving. Providers, opening hours and weather-dependent availability may change; check the specific options for your travel dates before your trip.
