For a trip to Bieuzy, you can choose from several different themes: architectural and religious history, local traditions, and hiking and mountain biking routes. The chapels, churches and fountains each have their own historical or storytelling connections. You can therefore plan your visit around whether you want to focus more on religious buildings and legends or on trails in a designated natural area.

Chapels, Churches and Traditional Stories

The Chapelle de la Trinité in Castennec was built in the second half of the 15th century under the joint patronage of the Rimaison and Rohan families. It is listed as a historic monument, including its fountain; the listing was made by decree on June 24, 2020. The protected monument therefore includes both of these features. The chapel’s construction date is the key reference point for its chronology; the 2020 listing indicates its protected status, not its year of construction.

The Chapelle Saint-Gildas on the Blavet is considered the hermitage of Saint-Gildas and Saint-Bieuzy. It was built in front of the cave considered to have been the hermitage of Saint Gildas in the 6th century. The reference to the 6th century therefore applies to the cave as a hermitage, not to the construction date of the chapel. A stone at the chapel that rings in the sun is also said, according to tradition, to have been used by Saint Gildas to call his faithful.

A car park is available 200 metres from the Chapelle Saint-Gildas. Check parking options before your visit.

The Église Notre-Dame du Bon Voyage in Bieuzy dates from the 16th century. The Église de Bieuzy has stained-glass windows depicting the life of Christ and is classified as a historic monument. The Fontaine de Bieuzy is associated with another kind of cultural tradition: it is linked to the legend of Saint Bieuzy, who, according to tradition, was believed to have the power to cure rabies and migraines. Christian imagery and a local saint’s legend thus stand side by side as distinct themes.

Landscapes and Trails

The Landes du Crano are designated a ZNIEFF, short for Zone Naturelle d’Intérêt Écologique, Faunistique et Floristique (Natural Zone of Ecological, Faunistic and Floristic Interest). Hiking trails, including the GR, and mountain biking routes cross the area. Those wishing to explore on foot can follow the hiking trails; mountain biking routes offer a different way to experience the area. Together with its ZNIEFF designation, these trails make it a natural area and a destination for outdoor activities, alongside the cultural sites.

Another point of reference is the Circuit de Castennec, which starts at the Église de Bieuzy. The Castennec viewpoint offers views over the Blavet Valley. The starting point and the viewpoint answer different planning questions: the circuit has a named starting point, while the viewpoint offers a perspective on the landscape. Check the route details before setting out.
