The abbey, forges and Étang de l’Abbaye give Paimpont a distinctive mix of sacred art, industrial history and nature watching. Other highlights include an immersive attraction dedicated to the Brocéliande forest, summer craft markets and trails of varying lengths. When planning your stay, you can focus on specific interests—for example, history, a market day or time outdoors.

The abbey and Brocéliande: two cultural highlights

Paimpont Abbey features 17th-century woodwork. Its sacristy also houses a 15th-century reliquary of Saint Judicaël. These two details reflect different periods and aspects of the abbey’s furnishings.

La Porte des Secrets is housed in the abbey’s former outbuildings. This immersive, scenographic attraction explores the Brocéliande forest, offering a distinctive way to discover its world. Programs and access may change; check the latest information before visiting.

The Paimpont forges and their history

The Paimpont forges are considered an exceptional testament to two industrial revolutions. The part of the forge complex located in Paimpont comprises most of the buildings. These include a ruined rolling mill and a village made up of several residential buildings. The industrial story thus encompasses both a production facility and the buildings of the associated village.

A specific date also helps place the history of the forges: in 1857, they produced rails, contributing to the introduction of rail transport in Brittany. Visitors drawn to Paimpont for its history can consider this industrial development alongside the abbey’s artistic and religious history, while keeping the two subjects distinct.

Summer markets and nature by the Étang

The Brocéliande, Les Marchés Enchantés initiative organizes craft markets in Paimpont each summer, with more than fifty craftspeople taking part. The markets are held on Fridays in July and August, from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m., on the abbey esplanade. As this is a seasonal event and dates may change, check the latest dates and times before your trip.

The Étang de l’Abbaye de Paimpont is an artificial pond covering about 50 hectares. It is fed mainly by streams from the surrounding forest. Kingfishers, grey herons and mallards are among the birds found at the pond. The Étang also offers opportunities for nature and bird watching.

Choose trails by time, distance and activity

A walking trail runs around the Étang from April 1 to September 30. Allow about two and a half hours to complete the full loop; bicycles are prohibited. Check the seasonal access information again before your trip.

Another walking route, the 11-kilometre Circuit des Landes de Gurwan, starts in Paimpont. Seasonal access restrictions may apply to this route. The two trails differ in how they can be planned: an approximate duration is given for the loop around the pond, while the Circuit des Landes de Gurwan is described by its length.

For horse riders, the Circuit équestre de Paimpont Les Forges (No. 13) starts in Paimpont and is open year-round. Forest access and hunting conditions may affect its use on certain days; take these conditions into account when choosing when to ride.
