Saint-Jacut-De-La-Mer combines nine beaches with traces of its abbey history, fishing and seafaring. When planning your visit, you can focus on different aspects of the area: its coastal landscape, historic sites or activities on the water. Paths across the peninsula are also among the options; however, walking to the Ébihens is dependent on the tide.

Coastal landscape and paths by the sea

The foreshore of the Bay of Arguenon is one of Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer’s notable coastal areas. It is significant for its landscape, biology, history and archaeology. Above Plage de l’Abbaye, a promenade follows the former customs officers’ path, offering panoramic views over the bay. Two stairways lead down at the Digue de la Banche, including a traditional staircase made of sandstone steps. Wooden remains of the Ducs d’Albe are also visible on the beach.

The Ébihens archipelago can be reached on foot from Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer at low tide. Check the tidal conditions before making the crossing. Coastal scenery and historical traces meet here: the tower on the Ébihens served as a lighthouse from 1650 until the Fréhel lighthouse was built. The Port de la Chapelle, a historic anchorage where coastal vessels could remain afloat, was located on the southern beach of Île des Ébihens.

Abbey, fishing and maritime history

Saint-Jacut Abbey was founded in the 5th century by Saint Jacut as a Benedictine monastery. The Digue des Moines is another link to the abbey’s history: the 1,100-metre earth embankment was built by Benedictine monks from the abbey and faced on the seaward side with dry stone masonry. Its construction therefore differs significantly from the stairways at the Digue de la Banche.

A slipway and a small dyke were built at Houle Caussel in 1867 as part of a second small harbour. The town’s fishing history is also featured at La Maison du pêcheur in the town centre. The exhibition space is for children and adults; nine bilingual panels in French and English show how local fishing practices have changed over time. Audiovisual archives cover the mackerel landings at the port of Houle Causseul in the 1920s. Village-rivages also takes visitors around the peninsula through seven sites associated with its maritime heritage. Guided tours are offered year-round by the tourist office and/or the Village-rivages association. Dates and reservations may change.

Water sports and an insight into shellfish farming

The Club Nautique de Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer offers catamaran sailing, windsurfing, paddleboarding and kayaking, as well as land sailing. Options include courses, club activities and equipment rental. Sailing, stand-up paddleboarding and kitesurfing are available at Rougeret beach. Availability and local arrangements may vary, so check current offerings and booking options before planning your visit.

Shellfish farming is another way to explore the area: accompanied by professionals, visitors can discover oyster beds and bouchot mussel farms. The experience offers a look at local uses of the coastline and a subject distinct from the historic ports and fishing. Check in advance which operators are currently participating and how to book.

Hiking and cycling routes, bus travel

The GR®34, the former customs officers’ path, can be walked as a hiking trail around the Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer peninsula. Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer is also a stage on the Vélomaritime® cycling route. For route planning, check the latest route information; local trail conditions may vary.

BreizhGo buses connect Saint-Jacut-de-la-Mer to Saint-Malo station on route 214 and to Dinan station on route 212. As no information is provided about whether the timetables are current, check connections before departure. This lets you consider travel options separately from deciding whether to focus on coastal paths, maritime history or water sports during your stay.
