Saint-Cast-Le-Guildo can be explored through a range of coastal themes: 18 kilometres of coastline, a long beach of fine sand, a beach with views of Fort La Latte, as well as walking trails and maritime heritage sites. To choose what to focus on, consider the differences: would you like to make a long sandy beach, a special view, a walk or places with a history the centre of your visit?

Coast, beaches and protected landscapes

Grande Plage is a 2 km-long sandy beach with fine sand. Plage de la Fresnaye offers something different: it lies between Pointe du Chatelet and Pointe du Grouin de la Fosse, with views of Fort La Latte. This lets you compare the two beach destinations by their different features: fine sand and length at Grande Plage, and views and a location between two headlands at Plage de la Fresnaye.

The part of Pointe de l’Isle belonging to Saint-Cast-Le-Guildo was classified as a protected site on 17 June 1945. This historic protected status adds another dimension to the coast’s beaches and views.

In 2017, Grande Plage received the Handiplage label. Facilities mentioned at the time included an access mat to the beach, an adapted beach cabin and two wheelchairs provided for visitors. If these facilities are important for planning your visit, check that they are still available before travelling.

Walking trails, stones and activities

Saint-Cast-Le-Guildo has walking trails, including a long-distance trail with sea views. Check route conditions before setting out so you can plan your walk accordingly.

A special geological discovery is the Pierres Sonnantes on Goule d’Enfer beach: when struck with another stone, they produce a metallic sound. From Notre-Dame du Guildo, you can reach them in about five minutes via the GR34 coastal trail; the stones lie on the shore beyond the wooden bridge. Tides can affect access, so keep this in mind when planning your visit.

Saint-Cast Aventure offers 190 varied activities across 14 courses in a green, unspoilt natural setting. Check opening times and booking arrangements before you travel. The Place aux MĂ´mes festival takes place every Friday during school holidays, with a varied programme for children; programme details may change from season to season.

History on site

Cimetière des Braves has two historical associations: in the 17th century, it received the bodies of plague victims. Later, it was chosen as the burial place for the French victims of the Battle of Saint-Cast in 1758. The chronology helps put the cemetery’s history in context without conflating the two events.

The Frégate Laplace memorial at Pointe du Loup commemorates the sinking of the weather frigate Laplace in the Bay of La Fresnaye. On the night of 16 September 1950, the ship struck a mine while seeking shelter from a storm. The memorial was erected on 14 September 1952 on the cliffs at Plage de la Mare by Antoine Pinay and René Pléven. It thus links a specific coastal location with the story of the shipwreck.
