Plessix-Balisson brings together the history of a former castle village, a church dating from the early 20th century and a short circular trail. Also here are village houses with individual names and a view over the Bay of Beaussais from the former Ménéguen windmill. The focus is therefore not only on individual buildings: local themes range from medieval traces and ecclesiastical details to a landscape panorama.

A castle village with surviving traces

Plessix-Balisson is a former castle village built on an old fortification. Baluçon Castle was built in 1150 by Lord Geoffroy Baluçon. It was triangular and stood on a hill where two streams met; the streams fed its moats. Today, only a well and a few remains of the castle survive. The hill, waterways and moats illustrate the relationship between the structure and its surroundings; the well and the remains mark what is left of the castle.

Saint-Pierre and the village houses

The Church of Saint-Pierre dates from the beginning of the 20th century. Inside is a 16th-century statue of the Virgin and Child. The parish precinct also includes a granite holy-water stoup from the 15th century, a cemetery, a yew tree and two crosses. Several periods of history are therefore found close together at Saint-Pierre: the church building is considerably younger than the holy-water stoup and the statue of the Virgin and Child. In addition to the building itself, the history of the village encompasses several distinct features of the parish precinct.

The village houses also have individual names, including La Juridiction, L’Auditoire and La Petite Halle. These names add further details about the character of the village to its castle and church history: the focus here is not solely on buildings, but also on individual houses.

Circuit de Baluçon and bay views

The Circuit de Baluçon is an easy 2.5-kilometre circular trail that takes 45 minutes. It starts at the car park on Route de St-Jacut and is marked in yellow. In terms of time, it is a short walk rather than a full-day hiking programme. The distance, duration and difficulty rating give you a clear guide to this route, while the historical themes offer separate areas to explore. You can decide whether to focus more on a clearly defined walking route or on the individual architectural and cultural details.

Landscape and cultural life

The former Ménéguen windmill offers views over the Bay of Beaussais. This landscape panorama differs from the village’s architectural and historical features. There are also five workshops for artists and craftspeople, established in Plessix-Balisson in 2015. They provide artists and craftspeople with spaces to create and exhibit their work. This extends the cultural offering beyond historical traces to include a more recent aspect: the creation and exhibition of work.
