Perched on an 80-metre-high rocky outcrop, the medieval fortress town of Moncontour is one of the best-preserved fortified towns in Brittany. Its history can be discovered in the town layout, along its historic streets and on a circular walk through varied landscapes.

Fortress Town and Circular Walk

The fortress was founded in the 11th century to protect Lamballe and the Duchy of Penthièvre from attackers from the south. Its fortified character remains a defining feature of Moncontour today. A walk through the town draws attention to its architectural history; if you would also like to explore the surrounding area, the “Moncontour, Cité Forteresse” circular route offers a separate way to do so.

The circular route starts in Moncontour, is 4.6 kilometres long and takes about 1.5 hours. Along the way, it passes chapels and ponds and leads through forests and valleys. The approximate duration and distance give you a clear basis for planning your time, while the town’s history and the landscapes along the route reveal different sides of the area.

Half-Timbered Houses, City Gate and Textile History

The historic streets are lined with half-timbered houses and granite mansions. Flemish and Italian influences meet in the architecture—a distinctive feature to look out for as you explore the old town. The Poterne Saint-Jean adds another perspective on the town’s fortifications: this gate in the northern rampart dates from the 15th century.

The Poterne connected Moncontour with the suburbs of Saint-Jean and Saint-Michel, as well as with the road that ran between them. The gate therefore tells the story not only of the fortifications but also of the connections between the town and its suburbs. It can be viewed as a tangible historical landmark alongside the houses and mansions.

Moncontour’s history is also linked to the textile industry and cloth trade. These developed between the 16th and 18th centuries around the Breton towns of Quintin-Moncontour and Uzel-Loudéac. Moncontour was one of the most active centres. This period of economic history adds another perspective on the town’s past to its story as a fortress town.

Museums and Guided Tours

The Musée Théâtre du Costume traces 1,000 years of costume history through staged miniature scenes. Seasonal visiting arrangements apply in 2026; if you are travelling later, please check the opening hours in effect at that time. This will help you plan your museum visit around the actual visiting hours, without assuming a specific amount of time for it.

The Maison de la Chouannerie et de la Révolution presents a period in the town’s history. Check current opening hours before your visit. Moncontour also offers guided tours for individuals and groups, as well as an interpretive trail. Check in advance which formats are available on your chosen date. A discovery booklet for exploring the town is available from the Office de Tourisme; if you plan to use it, check that it is available.

Gardens and Art Spaces

The Jardin d’Hildegarde is located among the remains of Moncontour Castle. Medicinal, dye and spice plants grow there, each with a different use and giving the garden its own distinct focus. Volunteers design, maintain and care for the grounds. The activity leaders welcome visitors in historical costumes; check the seasonal programme before your trip.

La Résidence des Arts is intended for artists: it hosts them and provides studios where they can present their work to art lovers and tourists. The Résidence includes three open studios where artists and craftspeople can work. Alongside fortifications and town history, artistic practice and the presentation of artworks are also among the subjects to explore in Moncontour.
