Valcivières connects the high-altitude Hautes-Chaumes with a tradition of pastoral farming that continues to this day. A stay here brings together nature, outdoor activities and the history of the jasseries. A circular trail, seasonal access to the heights and an activity exploring pastoral heritage offer different ways to plan your visit.
Circular Trail, Jasseries and Pastoral History
“Le colporteur des Jasseries” is a 9.5-kilometre circular trail across the Hautes-Chaumes, from one jasserie to another. Its length and circular route give the walk a clear structure, linking the jasseries along the way. The term “jasserie” originally referred to summer pastures where herds were driven during the warm season, and later to the barn located there. The trail’s name thus brings together a route between jasseries and the history of seasonal grazing.
The activity “Pastoralisme et Hautes-Chaumes” offers another perspective. It includes a visit to an authentic jasserie, restored by the Conservatoire d’espaces naturels d’Auvergne, and follows paved paths. These paths bear witness to former rural life. Unlike the circular trail, the focus here is also on visiting a restored building, while the paved paths provide a link to the agricultural past.
Summer and Winter in the Highlands
In summer, the Col des Supeyres, at an altitude of 1,366 metres, provides access to the Hautes-Chaumes on foot, by mountain bike or on horseback. The extensive heathland in the highlands of Valcivières is also used for walks in summer. Summer plans can therefore take in either access via the Col or walks through the heathland.
In winter, the Col des Supeyres provides access to the Hautes-Chaumes on snowshoes and for cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing is also available in Valcivières. When comparing winter options, location matters: cross-country skiing is possible at both locations, while snowshoeing is an option for access via the Col.
Highland Nature and Pastoral Farming Today
The Hautes-Chaumes landscape associated with Valcivières is protected as a Natura 2000 site. High-altitude grasslands and heathland define this natural area. The circular trail crosses the Hautes-Chaumes, and the Col offers access to the same highlands.
Agriculture also shapes Valcivières today: young farmers continue to practise summer grazing to produce high-quality meat and cheese. This current practice complements the historical meaning of “jasserie”: the word’s history refers to former summer pastures, while pastoral farming remains part of local agriculture. The pastoral theme thus has a contemporary dimension alongside the historical significance of the jasseries and the traces of rural life.
